Every year we age a special batch of our much-loved Russian Imperial Stout in Whiskey barrels. The depth, intensity, and complexity of the flavor profile of this special release, like its predecessors, make it a worthy tribute to Old Rasputin.
Prior to 2010, Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin was released in such limited quantities that it was available only at the North Coast Brewing retail shop in Fort Bragg, California. However, we received so many requests for this beer that we began producing enough Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin to put into broader, but still limited, distribution.
Brewmaster’s Tasting Notes
This beer pours jet black with a comforting layer of toffee-colored foam. Warm, sweet ethanol rises from the glass carrying roasted notes of bourbon, vanilla, and cocoa. The bourbon character from the barrel-aging gives the beer a full-bodied creaminess and a warm, tingling heat.

On tap at Harry’s Hofbrau. This is the OR XV. Massively complex chocolate and vanilla backing, with a moderate roast. Full malty chewiness. Taste is similar to aroma. Black with deep brown head.

500 ml. (that looks like 750 ml. intentional? I assume) bottle sampled @ RBBWG 2014. Courtesy of & thx! to tderoeck. This bottle carries some age, maybe min. 12 months? Not sure. Absolutely lovely bottle. Pours a pretty dark brown, touch black with a big mocha head. Nose is sweet mocha, light soy sauce, touch charred wood, touch bourbon, some roast. Taste is bitter mocha, charcoal, bitter coffee grounds, charred coal, touch vanilla, bourbon. Bitter cocoa, some roast. Med. body. Maybe a bit past its prime. Solid enough but not stellar brew.

Bottle split at JF’s cheese and wine tasting, thanks to James T Clockwork for the trade, 22/12/13. Pitch black with a good sized tan head that retains well. Nose is roast malt, earthy cocoa, bourbon tang, bourbonic soaked oak, dark toffee, burnt sugars. Taste comprises chocolate, light spice, bourbon coated wood, light mineral bite, boozey lick, molasses. Full bodied, fine carbonation, boozey finale. Top draw impy, great balance between roast, sugar and bourbon, lots of depth, this one vanished pretty quickly between the two of us!

Aroma is dominated by madeira-like aroma. Mouthfeel is silky smooth but a bit leathery together with some dill (?). Flavor has loads of espresso and dark chocolate. Aftertaste has dark roasted coffee beans, cocoa and dark chocolate with some feel of alcohol. However this was a huge disappointment for me. I expected a lot more regarding the intensity of the flavors.
