Rye India Pale Ale

The culprit behind the Salem Witch Trials was not the demonic possession (which would have been kind of cool), but ergot infected rye. The rye malt and aromatic hops in this beer aren't likely to transform you into a witch, but maybe they'll inspire you to think about your own transformation - perhaps into an individual; a free thinker; someone who speaks their mind and follows their dreams. Personally, we'd go with transforming into an army of flying viking bears, but what do we know?

Admin Note: Original Wytchmaker has made it's return with a modernized hop bill along with a switch in yeast. Originally the non-farmhouse version was brewed with Dry English Yeast. This entry is only for the non-farmhouse Rye IPA brewed from 2010 - 2012.

Draft at CopenRoss. Light amber pour, thin layer of off-whte head. Malty aroma, rye bread. Taste is very mellow rye notes, and not overly hopped, so it' very smooth. Really nice, earthy, nutty flavors.

I have a pint can that was found at a Total Wine in the Austin area. Using a globe glass for the tasting this evening, I pull the tab and pour. I see an opaque, lemonade colored body and, with a moderate pour, a phenomenal head of snow white foam. The scent is some citrus, some melon and cut grass. The taste is decent, even good. Honeydew, a bit of kiwi fruit, white bread, pine, citrus, cardboard and field. Do not get anywhere close to 96 IBU in my opinion, just saying, but there is a bitterness showing itself. Not bad.

Canned 9/19/23, drunk 10/17/23. Moderately hazy, blonde-brass-bronze. Large, off-white head, moderate retention. This one was wildly different before and after adding the bottom quarter of the can in. Before, it was an austere west coast IPA with pine, resin and wood. After, it became juicier, though still amply bitter, with somehow, a maltier texture and sweeter flavor. Strange, but not complaining. Mineral, random house yeast character and hard water. Honey-like malts and plentiful citrus and tropical fruit. Chewy, nutty rye helps bolster texture, as well.

16 ounce can from Tavour. Hazy, pale gold color. Frothy white head. Aroma is citrusy with notes of stone fruit and earthy malt. Flavor is tart and acidic upfront. Bittersweet notes of citrus and pine. Grapefruit, lime, orange and lemon pith. A bit of yeasty funk adds to the complexity. Herbal and piney notes on the backend.
