This spicy, rich and unique beer is bursting with chocolate and coffee malt flavours. We’re famous for our pale and gold coloured beers at Oakham Ales, but we brew some great black beers as well and Hawse Buckler showcases just what our brewers can do in that area. Hawse Buckler (first brewed in 2006) was an excellent Black IPA a long time before the Black IPA category was even invented! Our brewers have been perfecting the recipe ever since. Colour: Black Hops: Amarillo, Chinook, Simcoe (all USA) Malts: Maris Otter, Wheat Malt, Crystal Malt, Chocolate Malt, Roasted Barley Allergens: Contains Gluten

Pours a dark brown almost black colour with a small creamy tan head. Aroma is roasted, malts and light chocolate with orange and a little spice. A smooth and moderately sweet roasted taste, malts, chocolate and dark fruit with a drying slightly acrid bitterness in the finish when it warms up a bit.

Black with creamy head. Aroma and flavour have an intense floral spice. Like cloves but more perfumed. Roasted malts, a little coffee too. It's a good beer but not my taste.

Cask 1/3 pint at the 46th Cambridge Beer Festival, 2019. Black colour, tan head. Nice aroma and flavour of roast malts, chocolate and coffee, also fruity hops. (I sampled only a small number of the beers available at the festival, but this one was \"Beer of the Festival\" for me.)

Gravicask at the 23rd St Albans Beer & Cider Festival. Filmy layer, spotty lacing, almost black in the glass. Promising smell of roasted malts, hints of cocoa. Blended flavours of cocoa, coffee and dark dough. Roasted malty bitterness to the ending. Fine depth. Likable. (Shared with Finn, 27.09.2018).

Bottle shared during Scopey’s 5K tasting - Croydon, London. Sourced from Kris Wines, I think. Pours clear brown with a frothy tan head. Mild toasted bread aroma with touches of chocolate. Light sweet flavor with dry bread, dirt, bittersweet cocoa, earth. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Light dry earth and bitter cocoa on the finish. Just so so overall.
