TSAR is rich and powerful, a full bodied Imperial Stout. Malty chocolate, mocha and dark berry fruit-notes preside over a subtle hop profile, whilst a smooth velvety texture in the mouth gives way to a lingering bitter, dark chocolate finish.

Bottle at home (Bitter Virtue) - 23/09/12. Very dark brown with a dirty tan had that soon thins to a pond. Sweet roasted malts on the nose, pine and hops - like RIS meets Black IPA in many ways, molasses, chocolate, marshmallow and a little coffee. Chocolate and coffee dominate the taste, a little like chocolate maltesers! Roasted malts and a faint dose of licqourice. Higher end of medium bodied, moderate carbonation, a little alcohol and some mineral tones in the fnish. Very well balanced imperial stout which I really enjoyed, the alcohol was very well disguised.

12 oz. bottle, pours a thick jet black with a small tan head. Nose is full of roasted malt, dried burnt cherries and other dark fruits, and wood - very inviting. Flavour resembles the nose almost perfectly, with burnt dark fruits initially, transitioning into darkly roasted malt and a very pronounced woody character that lingers. Full-bodied, with a soft palate. Nothing revolutionary, but a very good by-the-books impy stout here.

33cl bottle bought at Euston Tap, drank at home. Black as night with thick tan head. Hoppy impy stout aroma. Lots of hops. Smells like an American interpretation of an impy stout. Almost herby and medicinal on the aroma. Choc is quite soft as is the mouthfeel. Big hoppy nose, the malts are there but a little understated in terms of choc and coffee. Obviously some choc and coffee that are relatively smooth. Then some dryness kicks in on the palate on the finish. And then some more herby hops. Very drinkable as it’s 9.5% but doesn’t drink the strength. Not sure it has too much to offer other than a lot of hops and the smooth body. Yes I do like the smooth body. The hops tend to mask everything else though. Bit out of balance. But tasty and good.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of madmitch76. Pours an opaque pith black with a small light brown head. Roasty nose, somewhat rustic - clearly British hops! Rich body, heavy roast and tar, dark dried fruit, malty bitter finish. Rough but enjoyable. 150812

33cl bottle shared with Joes, Dutchdrebus and Ansjelaah. Pitch black opaque color, small beige to light brown head. Smell malts, dark malts, some coffee and hop. Taste malts, roasted malts, some alcohol, slightly hops, nicely bitter. Nicely oily texture, full body, medium carbo. Again a superb brew by Buxton!
