Pours a translucent deep amber, copper color with basically no head. Malty aroma that’s also slight floral and slightly spicy. Flavor is very similar, heavy malt character with some spicy bitterness. Heavy in the mouth with a touch of heat from the alcohol. Definitely could have been better.

Bouteille 12oz, courtoisie de Hogtownharry. De couleur ambrée-rouge et claire. Nez de houblon résineux, moyennement floral et citrique (pamplemousse) avec des notes herbeuses, malté de caramel sucré aux notes rôties, moyennement fruité (léger d’agrumes, d’abricots et de raisins), léger d’alcool et de buiscuits ainsi que de faibles notes boisées. Moyenne-ronde en bouche avec un pétillement moyen et une texture résineuse,, moyennement sirupeuse et légèrement huileuse. Assez amer de houblon résineux, citrique (pamplemousse asséchant), moyennement floral et aux petites notes terreuses (présent durant toute la gorgée) accompagné d’un goût fruité (agrumes, raisins, léger d’abricots) accompagné d’un léger goût boisé (fût de chêne) lors de l’entrée en bouche auquel se rajoute un goût de malt du genre caramel sucré aux notes rôties avec un léger goût de biscuits ainsi que des notes de sucre brun (traces de toffee), parallèlement à un moyen goût d’alcool assez réchauffant jusqu’en finale, où l’on retrouve un regain d’amertume de houblon plus herbeux et asséchant (faibles notes de poivre). Arrière-goût long et sec, assez amer de houblon résineux, citrique, moyennement herbeux et aux petites notes florales et terreuses, moyen d’alcool et légèrement fruité (zest d’agrumes, notes de moût de raisins).

Poured a deep slightly hazy copper with tan head. The aroma really speaks to the flavor to come. It has a thick sweet syrupy caramelized malt and molasses mix along with a healthy dose of pine hops in the nose. As expected the beer has a sticky, sludgy mouth feel that seems just right for this huge beer. Essentially it’s a very very hoppy barlewine. I taste thick rich caramelized malts that team up with a mighty pine hop bitterness and some sweeter pine hop flavor to wreck havoc on the senses. YUM. There is also light hints of dark fruitiness that lean the flavor towards a barleywine. The beer draws into the finish with residual pine hop bitterness and sweet caramelized malts. Just delicious. This beer doesn’t mess around. Its big bold and aggressive. It’s the Hummer H1 of autos and not the sissy H2 thing.

Bottle: Pours a muddy copper with very little head. Nose is strong of malt, caramel, dark fruit, and hops. Taste is loaded with malts, caramel, and deep piney hops. More malt presence than expected for the style and a hot ABV. Fun to sample, but not one I’d seek out. Thanks Eithcubes.

Rating #400... bottle. Alright, so I’m fairly excited for this one, Founders seems incapable of missing, so we’ll see what their Triple IPA is like. Pour is a reddish brown color with a very minimal head. As I’m pouring, I am almost overwhelmed with the hops aroma... pineapple and grapefruit are the dominant hops scents, but there are other caramel malt promises that are lurking in the background. I’m not picking up any sniffs of the 13% ABV... First thoughts are that it is fairly syrupy and thick... almost a sugary stickiness. That malty sweetness gives way to a hops blast of bitterness that finishes out the beer. I’m not sure that this is anywhere near one of my favorite IPA’s... it is simply a little over the top and unidimensional... It is certainly a really nice Imp. IPA, but the supremely bitter finish with an alcoholic astringency leave me a little disappointed. Still, really nice... just expected a little more.

Bottle courtesy of Moejuck: Poured a deep cloudy orangey color ale with a small white foamy head with limited retention. Aroma consists of huge bitter piney and citrus hops are dominating unsurprisingly. Body is very sweet and has a great malt backbone which provides a bit of balance with some of the hops. Body is full with some low carbonation and no alcohol could be directly noticeable, which is quite a feat at 13$ ABV. Overall, I thought this was an interesting experiment at the intersection of an IIPA, barley wine and American Strong Ale.

12oz Bottle pours out a very nice amber topped with a off white head. Great nose of hops and caramel. The tast is the same. WOW it has been a while since I have had a Double IPA. They are so good. Thanks Buckybeer for this one.

Bottle courtesy of BeerAndIT on 06/16/2009. Somewhat hazy dark amber body with ruby highlights and a medium frothy off-white head. Big caramel aroma with some floral and citrus hops. Big caramel flavor, more floral and citrus hops with a big bitter kick in the finish. Medium full body with moderate carbonation. 7/4/8/3/15 - 3.7 07/22/2006: From Immy’s Tasting. Clear dark amber color with a thin tan head. Sweet caramel and floral hops aroma. Sweet bitter citrus flavor with a caramel background. This is hopped to hell and then some, but delicious. 8/4/8/4/16 - 4.0

Pours deep red/amber into a tulip. Head quickly recedes leaving filmy lace. Resin, pine and DIPA/barleywine notes. Upfront biting hops balanced with roasted caramel malts. Sticky. Lasting bitter hop alcohol finish.

Very dark amber with a decent lacing for something with such high alcohol - piney hop aroma, with copious amounts of caramel malt, herbs, and some barleywine smells (flaked oats, toffee) - this tastes very similar to the Yulesmith I just had, just amped up a bit - lots of malt sweetness battles a huge hop bite - meanwhile, a subtle smokiness lingers in the background, adding an interesting dimension to this ale - this is some seriously ass-kicking stuff - a little hot right now, but with some aging, who knows? Thanks to OhioDad for this bottle.
