Beware, this is a BIG beer. Brimming with luscious roasted coffee and chocolate malt flavours which are balanced by a brisk bitterness and bold freshness from the hops. If you’re feeling politically incorrect try it with your favourite cigar, or a dram of your best single malt whisky. Or, if your tooth is sweeter, why not jump in at the deep end with the most decadent dessert of all; half a bottle in a glass with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream on top (beer geeks like us know it as the Imperial Stout Float). Or simply enjoy it on its own as a decadent dessert or night cap - the perfect winter warmer! If you don’t already know the history of Russian Imperial Stouts please check it out on the internet, it’s a good story. But remember, although based on that century-old classic style, this beer is a very modern interpretation, like all our beers!

Thick oily black pour, large mocha head. Lovely aroma of charred malts, bitter cocoa, and espresso, with hints of green, piney hops. The mouthfeel is thick and luscious, and a little creamy. The alcohol is a tad bit present in the finish with some light warming. The hops come out a bit more near the end, and the burnt malts really shine. Medium to high bitter finish. Great stout.

Can said 10%. Clear, dark brown pour (with a tint if red) and a stable tan head. Aromas of coffee, milk/cream, toast, toffee. Taste is cocoa/dark chocolate, coffee, milk/cream, hints of chicory and herbs. Quite a boozy finish which works well. Evokes good memories of NZ.

A banger of an imperial stout. Aromas of chocolate, caramel, molasses, sugar and a little coffee. Some chicory taste in the mouth, with a beautiful sweet caramel overlay and that hint of coffee finishing it off. Can from Swords at Vic Market.

Can. A- Roasty, char, cocoa powder, coffee. A- Black color, black liquid, brown head. T- Roasty, bitter, hickory, espresso. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, bitter finish. O- Not often I get a NZ beer but what I've had has been pretty solid. I saved this purposely because I knew it would be aggressively bitter fresh per the can. Even 3 years later this is still holding on. Lots of nice ashy charred wood and bitter espresso. Very solid and traditional. Definitely had heartburn after this one.
