Smells strong caramel and some roasted notes. Chocolate color, small light brown head. Highly sweet, bitterness is concealed. Full body. Somewhat resembles sweet imperial stout.

Bottle (several years out of date) from Craft Beer Oasis, Crewe (at 9.7%) – drunk at home. Pours a very dark burgundy with a fair sized but transient beige head. The aroma is sweet and malty plus overtones of fruit cake. In the mouth it is again sweet with molasses, raisins and treacle, but there’s also a herbal aspect with cough medicine and balsamic vinegar. After a while the alcoholic strength starts to show, and this dominates the warming finish . Great.

Pour une quadruple trappiste, j'ai tout de même été déçu tant par la structure, avec un alcool qui donne de la chaleur mais qui ne domine pas son affaire et des arômes particuliers, d'une bonne complexité mais manquant plénitude. Le visuel est sur un brun limpide, avec une très fine effervescence modérée et un mousse s'estompant très rapidement. Le nez est très riche mais sans être des plus avenants sur le raisin sec, caramel, candy, fraise, touche noix de coco, amande, épices (dont cannelle), miel et porto. En bouche, si l'alcool donne une bonne chaleur et arrive globalement à soutenir la structure, il n'a pas ce côté flamboyant qu'il devrait avoir pour le style avec de plus un sucre trop présent. Une petite fraîcheur houblonnée arrive tout de même à contrebalancer sur l'attaque sur une base trop douce où l'on retrouve les arômes du nez avec des arômes de vin madérisé et de miel trop présents. La deuxième et arrière bouches sont beaucoup plus douce sur une complexité intéressante. Le final, long est cependant un peu aigre et pas exceptionnel. Un petit stage en Belgique s'impose !

Bottle at home, 28th January 2022. Pours a chestnut brown. Aroma is dark fruits, raisins, booze soaked fruit cake. Taste is rich, dark fruit, cake, caramel, molasses, bittersweet. Good

Im Glas wirkt dieses Bier nahezu schwarz mit maximal dunkelbraunen Reflexen. Die hellbraune Schaumkrone erinnert an die Crema von Kaffee, ist relativ grobporig und fällt in wenigen Sekunden komplett in sich zusammen. Sehr komplexe Duftaromatik. Dunkle Brotrinde, konzentriertes Aroma von Waldhonig, Kastanie, Holz. Dazu Aromen von Anis, Kardamom, Neugewürz. Der Antrunk kommt sanft spritzig und wirkt sofort mehr als nur voll, sehr süßlich-herb und unglaublich dicht. Am Gaumen ebenso dicht, süß-malzig, sattes Röstmalz, Schale einer Kastanie, Holz, Rumpflaume, Rumrosinen - unglaublich komplex und schwer! Das Genusserlebnis ist unglaublich und das Mundgefühl fantastisch. Was die Süffigkeit betrifft, darf man bei so einem Bier gar nicht davon reden. Hier geht es nicht um Süffigkeit, sondern um Genuss - und der ist in diesem Fall unglaublich und einfach Weltspitze! Im Abgang wirkt die süßliche Aromatik von Dörrobst oder Rumobstaromen sehr gut nach. Nach einigen Sekunden machen sich herrliche und überaus angenehme Röstaromen breit. Unfassbar, dass es solche Biere gibt. Unfassbar, dass solche Biere trotz ihrer Komplexität so ausgewogen wirken. Und unfassbar, dass sogar ungeübte Biertrinker (z.B. meine Partnerin) solche Biere gut und interessant finden. Ein Hochgenuss! Weltspitze!

Bottle. Malty aroma and taste, caramel, honey, spicy yeasty notes, plums, light sweet, medium bitter. Full body, malty spicy caramel bitter sweet finish. Ok.
