We’re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form.

We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale.

First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

Keg at Brewdog Camden. Dark brown almost black colour with small creamy beige gold head. Aroma is pine hops, oats, bit of smoke, roasted coffee and malt and a bit of chocolate. Taste is roasty, not as much bitterness as I expected, just a touch at the end. Quite creamy, bit of vanilla in there. Creaminess almost covers the booze, but you can taste it still. Subtle bitter finish.

Bottle. Deep dark brown color. Lemon, grapefruit and red berries in the somewhat green aroma, with hints of caramel and maple syrup. Firm oily hopbitter flavor with grapefruit, berries, bitter walnuts and caramel. Some maltiness shimmering through. Long oily hopbitter aftertaste, earthy and woody. Not perfectly balanced, but a very big and tasty beer. A later tasting @ jbrus’s place showed blackcurrant notes, tannines, and assam tea.

Backlog rating. Multiple 11th anniversary bottles back in 2007. Pours a deep brown to black with a finger of foam that lingers. Dark chocolate and citrus zest and pine on the nose. Bitter on the palate, roasty with good citric and pithy undertones. Bitter finish with some coffee and more pith and resin.

From Oct 2007

This one pours from 22oz bottle a very dark brown with reddish hues and a nice 2 finger head of tannish foam that shrinks slowly leaving some spotting and some lacing.

The smell is of citrus hops along with an ample nose of caramel malt and some fruit.

The taste is a big mix of caramel malt and citrus and my, they work really well together and I find a very balanced flavour overall. Tasty! There's a bit of an alcohol warming after the swallow but it's not obtrusive and is actually welcomed since today is a very cool Autumnish day.

Further sips in and I get some dark fruit, toffee, some coffee, some molasses, some alcohol, and a bit of chocolate. Lots going on here! It has a medium to heavy body and the carbonation is medium. Wow. Did I mention that this one is tasty? It finishes with a slight edge to the bitterness and finishing one sip just demands that another soon follows. Very drinkable. Very tasty. Very smooth. Boy am I impressed with this offering from Stone. I still have another bottle but hopefully, next week I'll find some more on my next trip to Colorado.

Bottom line: This is another great beer from Stone. Well done!!

Bottle, UK import, source not recorded. Backlog entry. Entering my historic scores for US beers whilst visiting New York. No tasting notes kept, just rating. But it was very good!

Pours a gorgeous deep black underneath a giant beige head leaving tons of lace. Nose is citrus-mocha, roasted and fruity with a notable hoppy back. Taste walks the line between hoppy porter and black IPA (as do most entrants in the style), with a huge roasted malt base topped by loads of citric-pine hop madness. Mild sweetness gets quickly overrun by the massive waves of resinous, clingy hop vitriol. Good but a bit abrasive. (5/2011)

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Signal Variety. Aroma is caramel, roast, dark fruit, citrus, light chocolate. Appearance is dark brown/mahogany--almost black--with finger-width light brown creamy head with fair retention and nice lacing. Taste is as aroma with late fruit/earthy bitterness, mild alcohol. Palate is medium-to-full bodied, with airy/foamy texture, lively carbonation and mix of sweet and bitter roasted finish. Overall, complex and very good but it goes a bit more to the heavy DIPA side of things than the lighter IPA side, which I would like a bit better.

Bottle from QClub at home. Bottled 5/24/16 but preparing for not super fresh given QClub shipping. Slightly transparent cola brown pour. Finely bubbled light tan head. Aroma is some trademark Stone resin, but a lot of dark somewhat musty malt too - like the Brewcraft shop almost. Perhaps a bit off. Taste is similar - dank resin hops with boozy bite and lots of malt. Very good, though as exciting as I hoped. It may be a bit less fresh. Still very good, especially for hk$30.
