Lightly hopped Bock lagers are historically associated with special occasions, so when coffee and beer coalesce locally, every serving becomes momentous.

Choice coco-nutty caramel scented cacao instinctively combines with Matchstick Roasters’s Gathaithi cold pressed coffee beans gathered in the Nyeri district co-op in southern Kenya. With community spirit firmly rooted by our true north strong and free, 33A of Coff33 warms the hearts of cool minds, loving every body who gratefully sips day and/or night.

Draught at the brewery
Black color with tan creamy head. Delicate aroma of coffee, smooth mouthfeel, dry, with notes of roasted malts and coffee, some roasted nuts too, some chalk; dry finish.
Elegant but simple.

A deep dark ale with a a thin lacing creamy brown head. In aroma, sweet fruity caramel and chocolate with coffee grind, vanilla, nice and smooth. In mouth, a nice sweet chocolate malt with light honey, coffee notes, herbaceous hops, light mineral notes, light vanilla and soy sauce, pleasant. On tap at brewery.

Draft - Dark roast coffee. Deep brown with a nice beige head. Malty sweetness and light coffee notes. Not as good as previous versions.

They switched up both the base beer and the coffee for Batch 3. Dark brown. Thin head. Has a light coffee and dark malt character. Sweetish and a bit wheaty. Fair bit of tartness. Doesn't come together all that well.

On tap at Hopwired Festival, pours a deep dark brown with a small white head. Aroma brings out toasted malt and earthy coffee. Flavour is bright, with lightly sweet toasted malt, medium coffee roast and a hint of caramel. Well-balanced, with a lightly sweet caramel finish. Nice stuff.

The autumn 2016 edition of this brew is made with Phil & Sebastian coffee, not Matchstick, though both are quality roasters. Alemu Bukato beans are Ethiopian, not Kenyan. There’s a big difference between Ethiopian and Kenyan beans, actually.

Dark brown with a medium, rocky head. The aroma is a bit vegetal and buttery. That butter is on the palate, too. At low levels, beneath the vegetal, burnt coffee taste. The base beer is only moderately malty, like a Holsten Festbock or something mediocre like that. Disappointing...execution is off. I mean, most cold-pressed methods don’t really bring out the best in the beans, and I’m getting none of the distinctive Ethiopian character, and of course one should never encounter anything buttery in a bock.

Draught at the brewery
Dark brown color, near black. Mild, nice coffee aroma. The mouthfeel is lean, rather dry; dripping coffee flavor, with enough fruity quality from the coffee, and some malt backbone, dynamic elements appear; correctly bitter.
Fresh coffee brew, very nice.

Drat- lots of cold press dark roast. Jet brown/black with a rich light brown head. Rich roast coffee but a nice lightness in body. Finish has touches of toast and some chocolate. Nice.

On tap at 33 Acres, pours a deep dark amber brown with a small tan head. Aroma brings moderately prominent coffee, with not really any other character to speak of. Flavour brings out coffee upfront, with mild undercurrents of caramel and toffee, maybe a touch of cocoa as well. A very lovely coffee beer that I'd never guess was a bock at its base. Very good.
