This strong & dark beer, inspired by the Alfred bog, is our very first seasonal offering. Featuring bog myrtle, or sweet gale, harvested from the wilds of northern Quebec. This ancient herb was used in brewing hundreds of years ago and offers bitterness, a sweet aroma and herbal spicy notes.

600ml bottle, bottled on november 30th, 2011. batch #834
hazy amber pour, small off white head.
quite malty aroma, some light bread, quite a bit of spice. nutmeg, cardamon, some nuts, even a touch of lavender. mouthfeel is a tad watery, very light bitterness. finish is minerals, light lavender, more spice, and quite a bit of sweet malt. nice beer, couldnt see myself drinking more than a bottle.

Looks ugly with a dull, light brown and just a thin head. Heavily phenolic, bubblegum nose is wonky. It has a reasonably full body, touch of bitterness, not a lot of bog myrtle character. Neutered gruit, doesn’t really go far enough in terms of herbal character and is too ale-like.

Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver
Brown color, hazy, dull. Some sweet caramel, but the myrtle is really strong, and to me it tastes like dish soap, the mouthfeel too is soapy in the final. Alcohol feeling.
There’s a reason if these beers and methods have been forgotten.

On tap at St. Augustine's, pours a hazy dark amber with a small off-white head. Aroma brings earthy notes, winter spices, and toasted caramel. Flavour is pretty spicy, with winter spices, toasted caramel and light earthy notes. Bog water certainly doesn't sound appetizing but this is pleasant enough. Okay.

Plutôt intéressante celle-ci! Ça sent un peu plus que ça goûte mais tout est bien en place et juste assez épicé pour le style. C’est bien fruité mais toutefois un peu mince en bouche. À acheter de nouveau c’est certain!!

Bottle at County General in Toronto. Hazy deep amber pour with bubbly foam head. Aroma is slightly grassy hoppy, farmy, like a hoppy saison meets an amber ale. Taste is similar. A bit more food/savory taste probably some spice additions. Tastes "wintery" but not overly so - orange, clove, pepper. Not bad but wouldn't get again.

Bottle - Light grain an raisin, soap and herbal notes. Cloudy brown with a rich beige head. Spicy, herbal, and malty. Not my thing.

This one poured a cloudy amber colour with a nice creamy head. Some lacing. Scents include salon perm solution, very ripe fruit and apricot. First swig was creamy with light carbonation. Flavours of ripe fruit and a little caramel. Finish was a little bitter with that ripe fruit flavour lingering.

Bottle at RBWG 2014, thanks! Pours a hazy brown with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has light tart fruit with grass, light spice and a bread backing. Flavor has a light tartness with grass, sweet grains and a bit of bread backing.
