This strong & dark beer, inspired by the Alfred bog, is our very first seasonal offering. Featuring bog myrtle, or sweet gale, harvested from the wilds of northern Quebec. This ancient herb was used in brewing hundreds of years ago and offers bitterness, a sweet aroma and herbal spicy notes.

600ml bottle from the LCBO. Pours a hazy dark brown with a huge beige head that takes a while to settle. Nose is yeast and cloves. taste is quite spicy but not as clove heavy as the nose would indicate and a cola like sweetness.. Medium body with lively carbonation.

Bouteille 600ml.

Pours cloudy red. Smells a little hoppy. The gale adds a different bitter angle to this beer but the overall product is a little gimmicky. Bottle.

Pours a copper colour with a beige frothy head that last a while, but does not stick to the glass much. Mild beautiful aromas found in a Belgian ale with soft spices and yeast. Medium-bodied. Roasted malts that taste more sweet than burnt with notes of bananas in the finish. Pretty cool that they use wild harvested bog myrtle instead of hop. Nice and easy drinking spicy ale, but does not warm up much for those winter day (or nights). Still, a pleasant different brew that is mild overall (which it was stronger in all aspect).

Bottle: Poured a clear dark brown color ale with a small foamy head with minimal retention and no lacing. Aroma consists of light sugar and caramel notes with light herb undertones. Taste is a mix between a solid malt backbone with some herbs and some light candi sugar. Body is fuller then average with low carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Interesting though some additional carbonation would have helped.

A deep reddish brown ale with a thin off white head. A strong "boggy" aroma, with herbal notes, baked beans and light sulfur. In mouth, a lightly sweet treacle malt, with light chocolate, roasted, some metallic notes. Apart from aroma, not bad. On tap at the Elmdale Tavern, Ottawa, 6.50$ pint. April 2008.
