Making a Mondo Ultra Mega Super Premium Barleywine Ale is a little like having a kid. The first part is fun and messy, it takes a while to ferment, and then a whole longer to mature. It is expensive and takes up a lot of space. You worry about how it'll grow up and whether or not you'll still be friends. Eventually it stays out all night and comes home with it's skirt on backwards. You know how it is. Usually we package our ales within 15 days of brewing. This one we aged in tanks for over a month. Why not buy three-? Drink one now, keep one in the 'fridge for a month, and one for another year! Yummy. . .

Taste comprises fruit cake, toffee melt, light spice, dates, raisins, brown sugar. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a lick of warming booze. Decent barley wine.

Tap at the Great Northern Hotel, Melbourne. Poured a murky light orange brown colour with a frothy white head. The aroma is grainy biscuit dough malt, toffee, butterscotch, sweet tropical fruits, boozy alcohol. The flavour is strong to moderate sweet with a smooth rich, sticky toffee pudding, woody boozy alcoholic bitter palate. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.

This pours a clear amber with a 1 fin..err..1/2"...errr...well, it *was* there but now the foam is just a small ring around the glass with pretty much no lacing. Nice colour, terrible foam retention.

The smell is light for a BWSA. I get small notes of caramel malt and hops.

The taste is at least good. Caramel malt dominates but there's some hop bitterness in the background that helps with the balance some. And...the alcohol is pretty noticeable as a slight burn in the throat and some warming after the swallow.

The more I sip, the sweeter this becomes and even for me, and I love good malty BWSAs, it becomes just a tad too sweet. Cuts down on the drinkablity for me; that and the alcohol. Good thickish mouthfeel though.

Overall, I think it's an ok example of the style but I don't think I'd bother to get any more. It's just not up *my* alley.

bottle - Deep amber pour, small head, malty, caramel, boozy aroma. Flavor is sweet with caramel and toffee, a bit of dark fruit, alcohol, and some fading resinous hops bitterness. Full body. Very good.
