It’s brewed with classic Maris Otter malt and Fuggles and East Kent Goldings hops, all imported from England.

A new style to me, Old Stock Ale comes to me from the Cellar in Odessa, TX a couple of months ago. Let’s go. The 12 oz bottle pours into my New Belgium snifter. A smell, grain, yellow fruit and brown sugar. The payoff drink, hmm, unusual. I cannot slot this into my tasting experience. Wheat bread, peach, malt and yeast. Perhaps some Imperial Stout and a Belgian ale of some sort combo. Glad to locate, happy to sample, doubt I pursue next year’s version.

2017 bottle from Midtown. Pours a clear amber toffee color with a finger of foam that dissipates. Deep prune, currant and dried fig nose with toffee, oak and tobacco as it warms. Blueberry jam, slight warming finish. Alcohol is hidden fairly well. Looking forward to aging some.

Bottle from Systembolaget. We tried vintage 2009, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016. The rating is for vintage 2012 which was the best one. Dark amber with a small head. Sweetish with dried fruit, malt, caramel and some brandy. The body was full and the finish with warming alcohol.

12 ounce bottle. 2016 vintage; 11.8% ABV. Garnet colored with a small tight bubbly tan head. Rich, warming toasted malt flavor upfront. Notes of dried fruit, Madiera wine and caramel. Then the hops kick in. Intensely bittersweet and resiny and a wonderful balance to the big malty backbone. Quick amazing and certainly a classic Old Ale. Worth seeking out.

2015 Bottle. A wicked beast, strong and heavy, loads of boozy malt sweetness on top of a powerfully bitter backbone. Caramel, honey, brandied plums, wood, and pine all crash together in a thick, foreboding ooze, leading to a finish dripping with resinous IBU vitriol and a hearty liquour heat. Still a tad abrasive at two years, but a worthy pint nonetheless.
