Introducing Nautical Disaster Barleywine. Grand Prize Winnter, 2012 Golden Stag Home Brewing Contest. This is truly a limited-edition, single-batch beer made with Dave Shea’s actual home-brew recipe. A heaping dose of four different malts and a 3 hour boil produced a complex and luxuriously rich strong ale with a bitter finish. Good now, and brewed to allow flavours to blend and mellow for years to come.

650ml bottle at Brian’s office. Pours a clear golden with a weak tan hear. Aroma is candied oranges. Taste is malty, bready, hoppy bitter with veggie notes. Still too bitter.

Golden amber. On the nose, just sort of plasticy and maybe some rice syrup. On the palate, just big, sticky, no coherent character but a lot of malt all over the place, with alcohol in the finish, and it’s just sort of messy.

650 ml bottle. Pours a clear mahogany with light head. Aromas of raisins, toasted malt, alcohol, and light caramel. Flavors are similar with notes of burnt sugar and grass. OK, but nothing special.

Bottle - Caramel sweetness and some grape and berry notes. Clear brownish copper with a thin brown head. If only it tasted as it smelt. Orange notes, with some thick caramelThe sweetness isn’t as well rounded and the bitterness is a bit too much. This has the bones for a great beer, and it may need some time to mellow.

Hazy amber color. Initially it has a soapy smell, then it shows a load of vegetables. Thin body, mild caramel flavor, some dish soap, celery.
Not a good one. It wasn’t special when fresh, got worse with the years.

Dark amber color, clean, with large compact head. Some malt and caramel aroma, with a perfumy and buttery impression. Correct body strength, lean mouthfeel; simple malt flavor with just light nutty feeling; ordinary bitterness; modest sweetness.
Alcoholic, but not a barley wine; still, it’s clean and drinkable

650mL bottle, pours a pretty clear dark amber with a medium off-white head. Aroma brings out some metallic notes, some piney hops, some dark fruits, and a little toffee. Flavour brings out piney hops, some caramel, deep dark fruits, and some resin. The hops are perfectly situated, taking out any sweetness that may be residing. Well-balanced between the hops and malts, finishing more so toward the hops. Very mellow - it could use more punch in all regards. However, it's not very exciting and it's pretty simplistic. Good stuff, but a bit tame and missing some oomph, as well as some body.

Poured from 650mL bottle. Dark amber colour with slight haze and nice off white head. Dark caramel notes and some malt and mild dark fruit on the nose. Same taste with a slight kick of alcohol and mild hops. Smooth, oily texture. Mild bitter finish.
