Dark Matter is the only beer we make where we don’t say on the bottle what style it is. This is for a very good reason. Even we don’t know! It is more easily described by what it isn’t. It is not as roasted as a stout, nor is it as sweet or high in alcohol as a porter. And don’t even mention brown ale in the same breath. Like the Northern Lights, it is seductively elusive, bringing the mystery of the universe into your glass.

Bottle - Chocolate, chili peppers, roasted something... Deep amber with an off white head. Nice chocolate again tasting the chili and a weird roasted flavor, almost savory but finishes sweet. Rich body and a decent aftertaste. So very odd and different. I may have this again in a group to discuss, but more as a dissection than enjoyment.

Re-rate from bottle. Feels like they improved the malt base quite a bit: Darker, richer, Chewy, solid roast, light berries, good hop counterpoint, enjoyable. 6 3 6 3 11Bottle. Chestnut colour, low offwhite lace. Roasted grain, light coffee and dark sugar, ok grassy counterpoint. Medium to light body, slightly tinny on the palate. sparkly. Mellow roasted finish.

On tap at the Alibi Room pours a dark amber brown with a small beige head. Faint aroma of dry cocoa powder and very light roast. Flavour of stale roasted malt and not much else. The opposite of complex - very watery and weak. Dull and lifeless - not good.

Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver
Dark brown color. Mild aroma of roasted malt, dust. Dry mouthfeel, some roasted malts, light chocolate presence, correct bitterness.
A bit too dry and roasty.

650 ml bottle. Pours dark brown with reddish tint. Very light head that dissipates quickly. Aromas of roasted malt and bitter dark chocolate. Flavors of toast, very light dark chocolate notes, and malt. Light bitter finish. A mild porter.
