Barrel-Aged Fruited Sour Brown Ale Aged on Malbec and Chambourcin grapes

This collaboration fruited sour ale was made with our friends from Mikkeller Brewing in San Diego. It represents a blending of two programs featuring grapes from California chosen by Mikkeller and local grapes from Indiana. This fruited sour ale is a blend of a 22-months Sour Brown and a 10-month Sour Quad aged in Bourbon barrels. Next, it is aged on West Coast Malbec grapes and Midwest Chambourcin grapes. The resulting fruited sour ale is reddish brown in color and malt forward. Notes of fig, citrus, and dried fruit embrace the senses with a dry and tart finish.

Good cream/foxy head over reddish tinted black-brown beer. Red fruit & berries with a lot of acids in the nose. Very vinous, red wine. Even more vinous in taste. Dark red fruit, partly overripe, ripe banana, plums, figs; lactic acid, hints at acetic, balsamico, and also a hint at pipe tobacco. Acidthinning and light -burn. Medium light body with quite som slightly oily slickness, medium to good carbonation. Bit harsh but not unpleasant beer, vinous and fruity.

500 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 1/2019. Pours slightly hazy deep ruby red, light copper/brown color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tart/tangy red grapes, fruit skin, lemon, lime, peach, plum, pear, apricot, melon, red/green apple, currant, red wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, caramel, brown sugar, and toasted bread; with lighter notes of nuttiness, peppercorn, leathery/musty/lacto funk, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of grapes, fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, oak barrels, and dark/bready malt notes; with big strength. Taste of big tart/tangy red grapes, fruit skin, lemon, lime, peach, plum, pear, apricot, melon, red/green apple, currant, red wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, caramel, brown sugar, and toasted bread; with lighter notes of nuttiness, peppercorn, leathery/musty/lacto funk, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Slight oaken vanilla in aromas/flavors. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness, grape/wine tang, and yeast/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/tangy grapes, fruit skin, lemon, lime, peach, plum, pear, apricot, melon, red/green apple, currant, red wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, nuttiness, peppercorn, leathery/musty/lacto funk, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of grapes, fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, oak barrels, and dark/bready malt flavors; with a fantastic malt/tartness, tangy fruit, and spiciness balance; with zero puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering tang/tartness, spiciness, and carbonation. Medium-plus carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/grainy, and fairly acidic/tangy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Minimal warming alcohol for 7.3%. Overall this is an outstanding fruited sour brown ale. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of grapes, fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, oak barrels, and dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and fairly crisp/clean/refreshing to drink, with the mellowly acidic/tangy/tannic/drying finish; nicely soft and mellowly lactic for the style. Awesome balance of juicy/jammy red grapes, and Brett/Bacteria complexity; with great wine barrel presence, and dark/bready malts against acidity. Mild residual sweetness with crisp dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and outstanding style example as expected.
