The “alt” in Altbier has dual meaning, referring both to the top-fermenting yeast used to make the beer (Latin— altus— high) and to the fact that this ale is literally the old style of beer in a country now famous for its lager beers (German—alt—old; from an earlier time). Made famous in the city of Dusseldorf, Altbier has a varied profile, depending on the brewer, from malty to hoppy.
Alt Nouveau is a decidedly hoppy take on the style, reviving a brand the brewery first released in the mid-nineties. The Art Nouveau style illustration on the label is inspired by the artichoke plantings at North Coast’s partner, Fortunate Farm, in Caspar.

Ok, from a bottle the first impression is that its foaming, over the top of my goblet, and then has a big spicy yeast; all as I take a foaming gulp to save a spill. Iced tea eye, nearly muddy brew, creates plenty of cutting carbonation with each high personality glugging gulp. Sharply slicing co2 kicks your palate in and on the back of yer throat, whew. One of the better bubbly drinks in a while, all without coming across as not real. Refreshing yet it Does seem like more than 5% because its satisfying and never artificial. Much higher than average for a an alt. Clear brown with minimal white head. Caramel malts, toasted bread, and citrus hops. More citrus than I expected but it still works well. Nice.

Pour is a cloudy tan with large white head. Aroma is a un-sweet caramel malt with some dark fruit notes. Flavor is burnt caramel and treacle with some toffee and a pop of bitterness. This was a decent malt heavy beer without being sweet. The malts give off various flavors from dark fruit to burnt caramel.

12 oz bottle. Pours a mahogany color with moderate head. Aromas of salty pretzels, raisins, and grain with a bit of foot odor. Flavors of bread crusts, copper and grain with a bit of sugar.. An OK iteration of a crappy style. Thought it may be more based on the description.

Bottle: Lightly hazy amber with a creamy beige head. Caramel, citrus-peel scent. Taste is mildly bitter caramel/grain malt. Really nice.

12oz bottle. Always nice to have an Alt of any sorts. Filtered copper-brown body. Steady off-white head. Not really a perfect aroma, there is something a pinch off. Pleasantly drinkable, medium bodied. Nice interplay between the hops and medium dark malt tones. Just doesn’t have the finesse that any of the good to great Alt beers have. Grows on me some because I like the style, but has a faint butter tone in the aroma I can’t get over. Still OK, not bad.

From old tasting notes. Hazy honey gold color. Thick fine bubble beige head. Spicy aromatic malt nose with hints of fruit. Zesty toasted malt flavor with hints of plums and apple. Pleasing bitter hop finish and aftertaste.

Tap at The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours dark coppery amber with a beige head. Aroma is mildly roasted malt with a fair amount of hop. Med body at least. Flavor is lightly spicy roasty malt. Not entirely dry, not all that bitter, but it is clean and refreshing. Nice.

Bottle. Orange/lime peel, biscuit malt, and straw. Amber with giant off-white head. Lightly sweet lime/orange, biscuit malt, and moderately bitter/astringent hay flavor. Nice body. Solid.
