Imperial Dark Ale Brewed with Yams, Maple Syrup, Vanilla and Spices

The nights are getting darker and autumn is in its element. This variation of our fall seasonal brings both forces together for a limited time. Midnight Autumn Maple is a dark imperial ale brewed with midnight wheat, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, maple syrup and a whole lot of yams.

Sweet, some toast, some alcohol, maple, coffee, maybe ginger. Comes together reasonably well.

So I was hoping this would be a good Thanksgiving beer, and in a way it is but also not. The issue here is that it has all the things you might want in a beer on a cold late November evening. But also, its general dry to semi-dry presentation and roasted malt flavors are not a great partner to turkey, as I had hoped. So anyway it starts as a fairly dark pour with a modest head. The nose has some brown sugar, molasses, faint roasted malt. The flavor continues with molasses and maple syrup. Slighty vegetal presence from the yams, with roasted walnut type thing going on, vanilla and burnt sugar. As noted a semi-dry to dry profile, lingering roasted malt flavors. It's pretty good but forgjve me if I'm not too excited about a pastry stout.

Bottle at tasting. Dark brown pour. Aroma of cinnamon, maple, malt and ripe fruit. Taste has bitter maple, cinnamon, ripe fruit, raisin and caramel. Not bad, but could be more interesting.

23 November 2018. At Billie's Bier Kafetaria, Antwerp. Cheers to Anke! Pours hazy dark brown to black with a lasting, thin, beige head; little lacing. Aroma of nutmeg, cinnamon, earth & (wet) leaves, cookie dough, green tea, herbal liqueur, port, clove, milk chocolate, caramel, something cheesy or bready & 'dank' - very autumnal indeed. Medium malty sweet onset, chocolatey, subtle fruity notes; light to medium herbal bitter, tea-like yet rendering lots of spices too, as in clove, cinnamon, cookie, liqueur, even a touch of nettle & orange. Dryish, herbal hoppy finish, spicy tones, lingering dough, faint toasty effect, warming herbal liqueur alcohol. Medium body, thin syrupy texture, soft carbonation. Could have been more maple-like sweet, a tad too herbal overall, but nice, an autumn drink for sure.

Tasting glass @ Billie’s Bier Kafétaria. Golden small white head. Nose is fruity strange passion fruit, weeds, overripe white grape. Taste is odd mix of bitter grass, weeds & overripe tropical fruit, peach, cheese that grows on you and weird green weeds. Right overripe fruit, bit much at first but it grew on me. Def. not as good as their regular yam beer.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out lots of earthy pumpkin, roasted malt and a touch of cocoa. Flavour is robust, with lots of roasted malt, earthy notes, and pumpkin pure. Roasted root vegetables and roasted malt on the finish. Very good.
