A deep dark brown ale with a thick brown head. In aroma, a peaty chocolate with light boiled veggies, pepper, so-so. In mouth, a rather smooth peaty malt with faint chocolate. Tasted with GRM, Puskinwow, Boutip, Ian, Mike on Sept. 7 2012.

Bottle: Poured a brown color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of light smoked malt notes with light roasted malt notes and some weird overcooked vegetables noted which are not really pleasant. Taste is smokier then the aroma with light roasted malt notes and that weird vegetables notes still coning through way too strongly. Body is a bit light for style with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. The fact that most of the bottle ended up in the drain is probably a good representation of my degree of enjoyment of this beer.

Pours light black into an English pint. Mocha head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Smoke and caramel aromas. Thin with sweet dark caramel upfront turning to smoky chocolate in the lasting roasty finish.

Tap at The Pony Bar HK, NYC. Pours dark brown with a thick, creamy beige head. Aroma holds a bit of dark candies, light char and modest smokey malts. Nice flavor, medium sweet, well rounded, sturdy but not oppressive smokiness, some earthy bitterness, a bit of char, some soft brown sugar. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Sweet finish with lingering, lightly charry roast, further restrained smoked malts, very light ham, some dark bread. It’s a very decent smoked beer. Good job, Magic Hat.
