Full-flavored and robust ale with heavy notes of roasted malt. There are hints of coffee and chocolate flavors, complimented by medium hop bitterness and a hint of smokiness.

12 ounce bottle, bottle date of 04/08/10. Pours clear reddish brown color with 1-2 fingers of a fairly dense light tan head with nice retention that reduces to a cap that lasts. No lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of roasted malts, light chocolate, caramel, coffee, and a good amount of spicy hops. Some pretty weak aromas here, with a lot of hop presence. It improved a bit as it warmed up. Taste of spicy hops, with a bit of roasted malts, light chocolate, bitter coffee, and caramel. Fairly dry finish, but has a decent amount of bitterness, with lingering notes of roasted malt, light chocolate, caramel, and spicy hops. Medium bodied with fairly high carbonation. A bit of creaminess in the mouthfeel as well. Overall quite a hoppy and interesting porter, but 1.5 years have not been kind to this beer. I may have to pick one up fresh and see how it is. I had no idea they dated the front of the labels.

Bottle, small creamy mocha head, opaque intense dark brown colour, aroma of chocolate, dark dense bread and a hint of dates, flavour of charcoal and hay. Nice easy drinking but not too complex.

Dark brown coloured body, with light cola hues at the bottom with a nice sized one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of raisins, concord grapes, roasted malt, nuts, earth, caramel and a touch of peat. Medium-bodied; Odd mushroom and meaty flavour with a funky cardboardie malt with caramel and way too much nuts and earth - very potent, and not in a good way. Aftertaste is quite strong with the malt and earth staying the longest then some light alcohol and nuts noticeable on the very tail end. Overall, not such a good representation of the style - more fitting as a brown ale, and even then, it wouldn’t be a good one. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from the Beer Baron in Livonia, Michigan on 30-April-2011 for a Special of US$1.89 sampled at home in Washington on 04-June-2011.

12 oz bottle. Pours clear brown, very light for a porter, with a light tan head. Aroma is chocolaty and roasty with coffee. Flavor is roasted coffee with some cocoa notes and touches of dark fruit and cream. Flavor’s okay, but overall it’s a rather thin beer.

Pour is a black with a small tan head. Aroma is a nice roasted malt with a little chocolate showing up. Flavor is a little weaker. A little roast is going on but noting to carry this one. Average at best.

Bottle. Pours a dark chocolate with a large (3 finger) head that is tan and a little frothy. Aromas are a somewhat weak mix of chocolate and roasted malt. Flavor is a better than expected (given past experience) mix of the above with a little bit of a leathery/nutty side to it. This is much fuller than I expected given the previous reviews and my experiences with some of MBC’s products. This is one of their stronger offerings as far as I’m concerned.

bottle - Pours dark brown with a thin tan head and a light chocolate malt aroma. The roast malt flavor has some light chocolate and coffee notes. It’s medium bodied at best and could stand to be more robust in both body and flavor intensity. It finishes mildly dry and I guess overall I’d say it’s alright.
