Wadworth have been brewing 6X in their Devizes brewery for over 80 years. This delightful copper-coloured beer has a malty, fruity nose with a restrained hop character. The same characteristics emerge on the palate but with more intensity,leading to a lingering malty finish. The beer is full bodied and distinctive but with a high drinkability, ensuring its position as one of the South of England’s most requested beers.

Bottle from Waitrose, Solihull. Pours a clear amber with small off-white head, some lacing. Aroma of sweet toasty malts, caramel, light resinous hop, metal. Taste has a nice bittersweet balance with caramel, bread, nuts, spice. Light bodied along with the pasteurisation may mean it lacks a bit of character and depth once you get past the initial flavour. Still its quite a tasty bitter.

Cask at the Fish, Northampton on 29th July 2024. Deep copper with shallow off-white foam and full lacing. Malty aroma. Malty again in-mouth with berry fruits and a sweet tang of citrus. A fruity finish. Medium bodied with an engaging mouthfeel.

Cask at athe Park Tavern, Eltham. Amber pour with a white head. Absolute years since I've had this, probably the 90s. It was everywhere back then along with Marstons Pedigree & Courage Best (🤢). Anyway, nose is dried fruit, malts, quite floral. Malty sweet biscuity taste, more dried fruit. Malty bitter finish.

Bottle from Asda, High Wycombe. I have to say I'm quite a fan of 6X on cask - it's possibly my favourite bitter from any of the UK's traditional family brewers. Up until now, though, I've never got around to trying the bottled version. So, here goes. It's deep amber with a lasting beige head and a moderate fizz. It smells and tastes malty, with caramel and chocolate raisins. There's a little woodiness. The pasteurised note is less evident than in some supermarket bottled bitters (although it is still there), but it's definitely thinner and fizzier than on cask. So... definitely not as good as the cask version, but it is one of the better bottled interpretations of cask bitters, and unlike many of its compatriots I still enjoyed it.

Yet another beer that I have been drinking for years, but haven’t got round to rating before. Including one well remembered occasion in the Westminster Arms, WC1. Anyway, cask in the White Swan, Littleover – where it was the only non GK cask beer. Pours a dark copper with a small off-white head and good lacing. A stuffy aroma of malt and nuts, with a hint of cherries. In the mouth the initial impression is of sweet maltiness. However, soon a fruity freshness comes through with raspberries and underlying nuttiness. Hints oa ginger and spices as well. Finish is quite bitter. This is a classic beer, that still stands up well.

Bottle from Waitrose. Pours a clear dark copper colour with a large thick creamy off-white head. Aromas of bread and caramel. Taste is toasty bread, caramel, spice and a hint of dry dark fruit. Slightly sweet finish. Medium to full body and smooth slightly oily mouthfeel. Pretty good.
