When we asked our employees which beer style that we haven’t brewed yet they most wanted us to brew, Milk Stout was hands down the most popular answer. Interestingly, they also suggested lots of interesting variations on the style. We really liked the idea of a Salted Caramel Milk Stout – so we made one. A carefully selected blend of malts create the pronounced caramel flavour, which is augmented by the addition of natural sea salt during the beer’s tank conditioning.

Keg at the brewery. A clear mahogany brown coloured pour with a fading tan head. Aroma is lots of milky choc, drinking chocolate, powdered choc, little woody bark. Flavour is composed of brown bread, powdered choc, milky, tangy finish. Palate is semi sweet, powdery carbonation, spritzy. Slightly abrasive.. Pretty one dimensional.

Keg at the Cock Tavern - Hackney. Pours black-brown with a dense, long-lasting creamy tan head. The nose has a bit of chocolate, soft roast, raisins. Medium to big sweet flavour with amble toasted caramel, gooey milk chocolate, mellow bitterness, some sugary dried berries, very slight tobacco. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Finishes with a little more bitterness, some baking cocoa, nips of scorched earth, leather, more burnt caramel and sweet chocolate. Not bad overall.

Keg at Fourpure. It pours darkest brown - black with a thick tan head. The aroma is rich, sweet, dark roasted malt, salted caramel, chocolate truffles, earthy, full smoke, creaminess and plenty more caramel. The taste is smooth, rich/dark roast, charred wood, tar, bitter -sweet vibes, chewy, salty, black pepper, cocoa, burnt caramel and fudge with a drying finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Taste doesn't quite live up to the great aroma, but it is enjoyable nonetheless.
