Gold is a beer to treasure. Made with a blend of Caramalt and Maris Otter malt and brewed using lashings of English Fuggles hops for fresh vitality and distinctly herbal, earthy notes, if you’re searching for a beer full of character, ‘X’ marks the spot.

Copper amber coloured, next to no head but has a lovely smooth texture in the palate. Has a slightly grainy character but its bitterness is also evident.

50 cl bottle @ home. Rated on 18.03.2010
Aroma is slightly sweet with toffee, some English hops and hints of honey. Flavour is sweetish with toffee, English hops, hay, some honey, biscuits and caramel. Not my kind of ESB.

Hand-pulled pint in the excellent ’Railway Buildings’ on Codsall railway station: 17 Nov 2012. Cracking looking beer: bright body of golden amber colour with a good head that stayed the distance as the beer level slid down my UK sleeve glass. The aroma was thin and although there was a mini-blend of malt and hop notes there wasn’t enough to pick out any clear smells to pontificate about. The taste is a well balanced mix of semi-sweet maltiness and a woody, nutty feel with a mild hop bitterness under the surface at all times and rising towards the end of each sip. Pleased I found a cask version: thought it might be better than the bottled one and I was right.

Brown 500ml bottle, best before 2nd Nov 2010, drank and reviewed on a bright, sunny but chilli Sunday afternoon, 24th Oct 2010. Poured into an ’abbot Ale’ tankard: light orange/golden amber in colour with a good solid head od foaming bubbles on top. The beer showed a slight haze and bubbles ambled up through the beer to the head all through the tasting. Fuggles are used, but although I could taste them, their presence in the aroma was minimal. There wasn’t much malt content in the smell either, in fact there was very little smell to talk about. The taste was a pleasant blend of hops and malts, evenly distributed in a well balanced way. Sweetish upfront with a refreshing hop bite in each sip. The 4.7% ABV is evident as the beer warms in the glass, but doesn’t effect the flavours too much, just adds an extra dimension to them.

Cask. Deep golden colour with mediumsized white fluffy head that leaves some slight lace and also lasts for quite a while. Aroma is honey, fruits, some floral notes as well as mild wood and earth. Flavour is caramel malts along with wood and some fruits. Finish has some semidry grassyness in it. Pleasant and drainkable.

Bottled (K-Isolinna, BB 08/2010)
Amber color, decent off-white head, some lace. Flowery hoppy nose with some citrus, pineapple, iron and toffee. Light to medium bodied. Flavor has sweetish toffee notes, flowery and nutty hoppyness. Short hoppy aftertaste. Quite standard English bitter, wellbrewed but not very exciting.
