Gold is a beer to treasure. Made with a blend of Caramalt and Maris Otter malt and brewed using lashings of English Fuggles hops for fresh vitality and distinctly herbal, earthy notes, if you’re searching for a beer full of character, ‘X’ marks the spot.

Bottle. Golden body, with an off-white head. Citrusy and fruity initial aroma, with some malt, caramel and breadcrusts coming after a while. There is a good dash of grapefruit. The flavor is fruity and malty, with a nice touch of caramel and breadcrusts. Medium body. Dry, fruity and bitter finish with pinecones and grapefruit. Quite good, English bitter. After finishing it, I found out it was 11 (!) months past BB-date, but that sure hadn’t harmed it. (070711)

(Cask at Market Porter, Borough, London 28 Apr 2007) Golden amber colour with brief white head. Fruity nose with notes of orange, marmalade and earthy hops. Fruity taste with orange, mandarin and dry earthy hops in the rather bitter finish. Very nice one.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s, Banbury 27-04-06. Dark Golden in colour, smooth and malty with good hoppy flavours present, a very enjoable tipple. Apparently brewed to commerorate the 25th Anniversary of both the Butcombe Brewery and the Bristol Balloon Festival, strange that they then call it gold, you’d have thought they could have brewed something with silver connections?

Bottle (from Bierzwerg): Deep golden, clear, stable fluff - almost off-white - head; pale malt, lemony hops and a subtle fruitiness in the nose; light to moderate bitter-sweet flavour, light to medium bodied, soft; slightly lingering fruity and sweetish-malty finish with a nice balancing bitterness in the aftertaste. Nice archetypal english stuff.......

Golden colour. Nice fruity accent to the nose. Herbal, toasty, juicy balanced beer. I’d had this in London several years ago and didn’t like it. Tasting it a little closer to the source helped this beer out a lot.

Sampled cask conditioned. Golden coloured. Fruity, medium bodied, sweet and slightly bitter. Good, but unremarkable.
