Lion Red is a full-bodied malt flavoured beer, balanced with a pleasant hop bitterness. It is batch brewed using high quality malt and the finest New Zealand hops to produce a 4% alcohol/volume beer. This leading New Zealand beer's history dates back to 1907. Originally known as "Lion Beer", this brand became known to the general public as "Lion Red", which aptly described its red-coloured label and can. Lion Breweries responded by officially changing the brand's name to Lion Red in the mid 1980's.

330ml bottle from Beers of Europe: BB 21st Dec 2021. Drank at home on 7th Aug 2021. Poured robustly into an old Hoegaarden Grand Cru tulip glass. Still didn't get much of a head on the amber body. Malty nose and flavour, highly carbonated and semi-bitter from the hop content as they battle against the sweetness of the malts. I can see why the overall scores for this are low, it's pretty basic and uninteresting.

330ml can into glass. Pours golden brown with a bubbly white head. Light carbonation. Nose of sweet malt and cooked vegetables. Light body, slight zing. Has that weird sherbet thing going on that NZ mainstream beers have. Finish is watery and caramel sweet . Standard Kiwi pub ale. Obviously designed to be drank in large quantities.

330ml bottle. Pours gold amber. Caramel, sweetcorn, little too much acidity, fair hit of estery stuff. Medium body. Not great.

330ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours dark yellow with a small white head. Nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is malt and grain. Taste is light sweet, grainy, some caramel malt. Nothing interesting at all.

12/V/2012 - 33cl bottle @ Joyce's place - BB: 11/V/12 (2012-489) Thanks to Thomas and Annelies for the bottle!

Clear light amber beer, very small off-white head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: sweet caramel, nutty, some dried fruits. MF: soft carbon, light to medium body. Taste: sour start, then pretty bitter, toast, nutty, little sweet. Aftertaste: bitter hops, nuts, some mocha even, caramel, orange peel, very bitter ending. Reminds me more of a English bitter than an American Dark Lager, no?

330 ml bottle. Red to amber body with a diminishing white head. Weak aroma of grain and sweet malt. Flavor is like any other mass-produced industrial lager. Light grainy, some malt, weak caramel, kinda fruity and a weak metallic kind of bitterness. Thin body and short aftertaste.

(Bottle 33 cl) Clear, deep golden with a dense, white head. Lightly malty nose. Light-bodied, malty with notes of cardboard and metal. Dry finish with a hint of hops. Poor. 120208
