Imperial Brown Ale brewed with maple syrup and fenugreek
After nearly a decade, Game of Thrones has come to an end, and My Watch Has Ended expresses the state of Westeros after six seasons of war and bloody mayhem. As the drama unfolded, we brewed more than a dozen beers in partnership with HBO to accompany the seasons. My Watch Has Ended is a fitting close to this epic story. Enjoy My Watch Has Ended this fall with friends as you reminisce about your favorite episodes, your favorite characters, and your speculations on what, if anything, will come next.

I'm a fan of Ommegang, though the GOT brews have been hit or miss. This one fall about midway between that range. The visual hits all the brown brew notes. The taste is a little heavy handed with the fenugeek. I was told by a brewer a few years ago the way to make something maple flavoured was to add fenugeek, as the maple sugar get metabolized by the yeast. (I did know that last bit). The Ommegang folks have hit that up in spades. This beer taste of toasted malts, sweet molasses and a strong maple syrup finish. I'd say a little too strong, a more stubtle maple would have made this beer.

Aromas of chocolate and maple syrup introduce us to a rather malty olfactory that subtly lets notes of conifers and hardwoods pass. The beige foam is thick and rather dense on the brown liquid with reddish reflections. Taste is well chocolatey and accompanied by maple syrup and hazelnuts. The malt has a nice balance between the sweet and rancid bitterness of the hazelnuts. The hops are very little present except to add a touch of leafy in the final. The esters subtly recall black fruits but remain quite discreet. The body is moderately round and the finish moderately dry on a moderately mild carbonation. A nice Brown Ale, sweet, chocolatey, but lacking a certain hop punch.

750ml bottle. Poured a dark brown color with a light off-white head. Aroma definitely has an herbal character to it. Lots of maple, some french toast, and toasted nuts. Flavor has plenty of maple syrup, not overly sweet, herbal notes from the fenugreek.

An early December pickup at The Cellar in Odessa, I am ready to taste Watch Has Ended. I release the cage and cork to pour into my Great Heights snifter. Dark brown in color with a creamy, light tan head, here and going. The scent is Belgianesque, some dark fruit , sort of yeasty. And a drink, yes, not bad. Caramel, fruit cake, malt, a bit of chocolate, raisin bread. All things I enjoy. Time to settle in with this 750 ml bottle, enjoy the ride.

$11.29 bomber, WW. Pours clear brown with a small head that fades quickly. It looks like a glass of cola. Aroma is boozy, metallic, light chocolate, spice. Flavor is earth, light maple, light spice, brown leaf, caramel. Must say this is disappointing.

Bottle thanks to Kenny. It pours deep brown with a small beige head. The aroma is sweet, sticky, fragrant, boozy, toasted brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and earth. The taste is dry, slick, oily, toothy, chewy, earthy, umami, spicy, warming, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla with a dry, toasty finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Weird, but alright.
