A full and dark outing, Atwater’s Cherry Stout features the malt complexity common to American-Style stout with the tartness, not sweetness of Michigan Cherries. The blend of fully fermented fruit and toasted, nutty malt characters bring forth an elusive cherry wood aroma to the finish.
With Foreign and Export style stouts being the style Americans would have been most familiar with, the American-Style stout naturally evolved to be a bit stronger than their European counterparts, with the modern twist of American hops to set them a step apart.

12 ounce bottle. Translucent reddish brown color. Small creamy beige head. Light roasted malt nose is faint. Tart cherry flavor is dominant. Some roasted malt. Not very stout like. Some roastiness and cocoa notes. Light bodied and disappointing. Lacks complexity and depth. Mostly tart and thin.

Tap at tap house Munich. Light roast and fruity nose. Black, big brown, slightly reddish head. Light chocolate roast under cherries. Falls flat after that, no chewy follow through , no dry spiciness. Ok chocolate cherries in the aftertaste.

Bottle. I guessed before I poured that the beer would be translucent. Score! Deep translucent garnet body, medium dissipating to thin tan head. Thin, tart nose, mostly cherry skin, perhaps hints of chocolate. Thin, tart, acidic body, with cherry skin and modest dusty, roasty malt, but drinks more like a generic cherry ale than a cherry stout. It’s as if Atwater bottles equal parts beer and water.

After I read on the label “Cherry concentrate from state of Michigan” I wasn’t expecting much. Flavor was sweet and tart black cherries, chocolate, and some roast with a thin body and had a dry tart finish. Very mediocre.

12 oz bottle. Aroma has red cherry with chocolate and a little roastiness and cream. Fruit comes in the flavor across more like black cherry or raisin, cinnamon even, with some cocoa, roastiness, and black licorice. The stout part of the beer is a bit thin, but the cherry part is rather interesting.

Draught, 5.9% as Atwater Cherry Porter. Malty aroma, not that roasted, but slightly fruity. Almost black colour, seems hazy. Looks like prune juice when the glass is almost empty. Almost no head. The flavour has a good cherry, raisin and cinnamon combination. There is a little tartness from the cherries, like good sour ones. The cherry is a little fat and vulgar, but that works well with the oxidised note.

Bottle from Half Time. Pours black with a frothy 4 finger tan head. Aroma of tart cherry. Medium body with frothy carbonation. Flavor is tart cherry and some smooth burnt malt. There’s coffee as the cherry goes away. The whole is more tart than anything. It’s certainly interesting. Finally seems to finish a little chocolate cherry.

Bottle. What is it with this brewery? This is the second bottle from Atwater that I have tried to drink and the second bottle that exploded with foam and then tasted like sour, carbonated liquid badness. From what I tasted this beer has very little body and way too much carbonation. No malts to speak of. I need to give this brewery a fair shake, but right now I’m a little put out.

Could be better. Some cherry and malt flavor. It gushed from the bottled infected. This wasn’t an old beer, so I have to blame the brewery for that.
