The IPA in this Lion series, metal bottle (something you don't see every day!) from a health food store in Ghent. Thick and regularly shaped, eggshell-white, very mousy head on a lightly hazy, warm orange blonde beer with amberish tinge and lively sparkling. Aroma of pink grapefruit, dried bitter orange peel, melon, sweet onions frying in olive oil, dry biscuit, paprika powder, sundried tomato, pine resin, dust. Cleanly fruity onset, apricot and persimmon hints but not sweet, early stings of hop bitterness noticeable; sharp, stinging and very minerally carbonation at first, but the mouthfeel remains altogether smooth, even if a little bit metallic (I guess related to the packing...). Pleasantly biscuit- and cracker-like malt body, bit oily with a powerful wave of grapefruity, very peppery (almost 'hot') hop bitterness, resinous, piney and uncompromising, unhindered by any lingering yeast and malt effects - contrary to the majority of other IPA attempts made in Belgium. Apparently classified as an English IPA here but this is a full-fledged West Coast IPA in my book - completely fitting the profile of the now 'old school' version of modern IPA the way I got to know and appreciate it years ago. I seem to be the only one here but I think this is well done, did not expect that from this brewery, to be frank.
