Our first guest brew! This was a really easy invite, as Clown Shoes head brewer Dan Lipke is a long time friend and a brewer we look up to. Formerly of the Ipswich Brewery, we give Dan a lot of credit for helping us in the early days of Notch. And Dan did not disappoint us with his guest beer! A classic Saison yeast meets Black Currant puree and Galaxy hops. It’s tart, wildly flavorful, and pink!

Slightly hazy deep copper and brown coloured body with a violet glow and a decent, two centimetre tall tan head that fades relatively quickly. Aroma of fruit - apples, pears, blackcurrants (theoretically) and a dose of pure berries. Light to Medium-bodied; Fruity flavour with the berries, yeast, grain and a bit of sweetness from some unfinished caster sugar, but the fruit is the strongest for sure, and there is a touch of dryness, but nothing like a typical fruitless saison. Aftertaste shows some mellow sweetness, a decent tart and herbal flavour that is definitely more from a blackcurrant than anything else, but also some dry yeast and grain near the end. Overall, a decent beer, but not really a saison in the slightest bit, and shows much more of a fruit beer than anything else, and even then, is pretty mild in turn. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia 31-May-2017 for US$5,99 sampled at home in Washington on 15-December-2017 with my mom to celebrate the season.

Dunno what a black currant is but this is a nice saison with fruity notes added. Smooth, no bitter notes. Strawberry and black berry nose.

22 ounce bottle. Cloudy, pinkish red color topped by a large rocky pink, white head. Tart yeasty nose is redolent of berries. Tangy, earthy fruit flavor. Notes of yeast, raspberry and unripe plums. Some dry, bitter black currant notes as well. Dry peppery notes in finish.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 4/3/2017. Pours hazy ruby reddish/pinkish/purple color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy light pink head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big lightly tart lemon, strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, currant, red grape, melon, pear, apple, peppercorn, light clove, wheat, lightly toasted biscuit, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, currants, bready malt, and earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big lightly tart lemon, strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, currant, red grape, melon, pear, apple, peppercorn, light clove, wheat, lightly toasted biscuit, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Moderate peppery yeast spiciness and light tangy fruit tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon, berries, currant, red grape, melon, pear, apple, peppercorn, wheat, biscuit, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, currants, bready malt, and earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/spiciness balance, and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from spiciness and carbonation, increasing through the glass. Medium body and medium-high carbonation; with a very smooth, moderately crisp/foamy, bready/grainy/sticky, and lightly tangy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6%. Overall this is an outstanding fruited saison! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, currants, and bready malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink. Great balance between fruit and yeast character. A touch on the malty side for the style, but there is no residual sweetness. Never overly prickly on carbonation. A highly enjoyable offering.

Currant, oak, and strawberry nose, some funk. Cloudy red, thick pink head, good lace. Black currant, twigs. Mild grape skin finish. Medium body, soft carbonation. Not overly fruity, good balance, could use more funk.

Poured into a tulip, the appearance was a semi-dark purple hued look with a cap of a little white foamy head. Light lingering lace.
The aroma had some grassy hops, light Belgian yeasty/breadiness, tart to sweet currants, some herbal tones and a little bit of hay to floral character at the end.
The flavor was somewhat sweet with that herbal quality coming about. Currants are somewhat there with a slight bready/yeasty undertone to it. Quick malty aftertaste leading into the finish.
The feel was just a touch medium bodied with a decent sessionability about it. Good carbonation and the ABV felt good.
Overall, I liked it for me and could find this an easy going drinker in mid to early Spring.

Bomber from CraftShack. Pours hazy pink with an off-white, maybe pink, head. Aroma of black currants and maybe citrus. Med body or nearly. Flavor is black currant, something earthy, and some odd malt like flavor. Quite different. There’s hop fighting berry. It’s not dry, but it’s not really strongly bitter. Benefit of doubt. I’m liking it.

22 oz. bottle, thank you T.J. Deep cranberry red color. Aroma is soapy. Mild red currents, (not black), maybe yeast.

Flavor starts out with the same soapy mess I get in the aroma. Mild tart berry with a crabapple bitterness. Bitter and tart all at the same time. I will pass on this one. Not cohesive. Hops and berry doesn’t work for me.
