Berry Monks is a variation on our classic Belgian Tripel, Merry Monks, brewed with cranberries, orange peel and ginger. This 9.3% ABV ale is ripe with apple and pear notes, which blend nicely with the tartness of the cranberries, the citrus twist of the orange peel and a touch of ginger. It’s great on its own or paired with your favorite holiday dish.

Bottle dated 11/16, drink by 11/18! Poured into a jack lambert shaker and it is big fizzing hazy orangish brown iced tea eye. Big foaming head immediately dissapears. Not looking forward to tasting this veggie spice high alky thing. Chunks of yeast on the bottom of the bottle. Nose is that of a tart brew. Taste is slight fruit at first then the alky medicine immediately kicks in, makes me shiver. Not sure if I can drink the whole bottle. Yes, strong beer with alky and fruit concoction, whew, way too much for my lager lovin buds. Rather decent carbonation for a high ABV beer makes it almost palatable. I just hope the alky mows over my senses soon so I don't have to suffer so much thru this session. Cannot appreciate this fruit & spice beer. What on earth is this mess? Not a good overall ratebeer experience JMHO.

12 ounce bottle. Slightly hazed amber orange color. Brief creamy white head. Big fruity, yeasty malt nose. Notes of berries, pears and apples. Unusual tart, fruity, yeasty malt flavor. Lots of boozy character. Bread, berries, ginger and grape juice. Something is off here. The flavors just don't meld. The result is that the alcohol dominates.

Sample at 101 Beer Kitchen during the "Irish Beer Line-Up" event on 03/17/2017. Hazy reddish-orange color with a medium off-white head that dissipates steadily to a film. Stringy lacing. Aroma of fruit, yeast and spice. Medium to full body with flavors of Belgian yeast, berries, spice and caramel malt. The finish is tart berry and earthy yeast. Decent overall.

12 ounce bottle into chalice, bottled on 11/4/2016. Pours hazy golden orange/light pink color with a 1 finger dense light pink head with solid retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the lace. Aromas of lightly tart cranberry, lemon, apricot, orange peel, pear, apple, banana, pepper, clove, coriander, light ginger/bubblegum, wheat, candi sugar, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, fruit/spices, pale malt, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big lightly tart cranberry, lemon, apricot, orange peel, pear, apple, banana, pepper, clove, coriander, light ginger/bubblegum, wheat, candi sugar, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of peppery yeast spiciness and slight fruit tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of cranberry, lemon, apricot, orange peel, pear, apple, banana, pepper, clove, coriander, light ginger/bubblegum, wheat, candi sugar, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, fruit/spices, pale malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/spiciness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from carbonation and yeast spiciness as well. High carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, crisp, moderately bready/grainy, and lightly prickly mouthfeel that is great. Lightly warming 9.3%; a bit of increasing ginger spice heat on the finish, but never overwhelming. Overall this is an excellent tripel! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, fruit/spices, pale malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to sip on for the ABV. Still has the great balance and complex flavors of the base beer; with added fruit/spice flavors that compliment the style very well all around. A really enjoyable offering.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a murky orange color with a huge foamy orange-white head that left decent lacing. The aroma was musty and yeasty with a tart vague berry note. The flavor was musty, yeasty, a bit funky and bretty with orange, cranberry and ginger notes. Long finish. Moderately full bodied. Interesting.
