Double London-Style Red Ale A double variation of our beloved Magician
The Double Magician is a dark red Double London-Style Ale. Deep mahogany in color with an off-white head, Double Magician has aromas of toffee, light citrus, and just a hint of roast. Double Magician is medium-bodied with flavors of raisin, toffee, and slight hop bitterness. The finish is balanced and dry.

Bottle. Murky deep orange-brown body, medium clumping dense beige head. Nose with tangy, sweet caramels and brown sugar. Body is even sweeter than anticipated, caramely with a little bit of prickly alcohol and boozy warmth, but overall lacking depth or nuance. I prefer the T-800 version.

12 oz bottle. Pours crimson with an off-white head and lots of particles. Toffee, ripe dark fruit, molasses aroma. Flavor is more of the toasty malt variety, more hinting at some of the molasses and fruits. It's solid, but I do wish the flavor had the dark fruits of the aroma.

12 ounce bottle. Hazy mahogany brown color. Fluffy tan head. Toasted malt nose hints at toffee and baked bread. Sweet roasted malt flavor upfront. Notes of toffee, plums and sweet raisins. Very malty, with some warming alcohol notes. Reminiscent of plum pudding.

Rich deep dark brown coloured body with a ruby glow and a nice, thinnish, single centimetre tall tan head that stays afloat for a while. Aroma of malt, toffee, earth, caramel, grain, a touch of licorice and even a noticeable amount of rye. Medium-bodied; Earthy malty flavours dominate at first with definite flavours of peanuts and cashews along with some grain, rye, oatmeal and a lot of caramelised sugars tucked away with some pit fruits and a hint of licorice near the end. Aftertaste shows some grain, but mostly the bitterness from the caramelised sugars and a lot of sweetness as well and a touch of deep licorice with bunches of malt to finish off the beer. Only a handful of hops noticeable anywhere in this beer - from aroma to finale. Overall, a decent beer with some deeper flavours, but a bit too malty and bitter for me, for the style and the ABV, but definitely not a bad beer, just a tad deep and assertive. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Meijer in Dearborn, Michigan on 11-December-2016 for US$1,79 sampled in my hotel room here in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on 20-May-2017.

12 ounce bottle. Last rating before my MICHIGAN TRIP!!! Dark rusty brown, large foamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of toffee, cherries, raisin, earth, molasses. The taste is toffee, raisin, juicy cherries, vanilla, caramel. Medium bodied. Nice!

Sampled on draft this beer poured a carmel-brown color with a huge foamy orange-beige head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was a bit toasty and had faint dark fruits. The flavor was tart, astringent and medicinal with toffee, pear and faint dark fruits. Medium length finish. Medium body. Not good.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 10/28/2016. Pours crystal clear deep ruby red color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, raisin, plum, apple, orange zest, light chocolate/cocoa, herbal, floral, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, raisin, plum, apple, orange zest, light chocolate/cocoa, herbal, floral, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/spicy hop and roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, raisin, plum, apple, orange zest, cocoa, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light dryness from hop/roast bitterness, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready, and lightly slick/syrupy/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 8.1%. Overall this is an outstanding Irish red ale! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. Very rich and complex on malt flavors, without being too fruity/yeasty. A highly enjoyable offering.
