Milwaukee Brewing Company Hop Freak Double IPA

Hop Freak Double IPA

Milwaukee Brewing Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States 🇺🇸

IPA - Imperial / Double Regular
Score
7.21
ABV: 8.7% IBU: 80 Ticks: 9
A collaboration with Milwaukee’s own Rishi Tea, this IPA is infused with Organic Jasmine Tea, lending it a sweet, floral aroma. Strong citrus notes come from the generous amount of American hops. Hop Freak was born big and bitter but a sizable malt bill adds balance to this beast.

Mostly clear deep copper and bronze coloured body with a very thick, super frothy off-white and creamy tan head that starts off at eight centimetres tall that fades very slowly. Aroma of biscuits, bread, yeast, alcohol, light grassy hops, some pugent malt, deeper hops and a bit of caster sugar in the nose. Full-bodied; Rich, deeply malty and almost metallic and bitter and pungent notes dominate at first with a lot of grass and dryness right behind with a deep tea-like note and some floral bitterness at the end, with deep sweetness from honey and perhaps resin, but ending mild, malty and fairly bitter from the hops. Aftertaste shows a lot of sweetness, a ton of malt body and some dry, grassy, perfumey aspects that almost taste like stone fruits and melon, but it is probably the tea leaves here. Overall, about what I'd expect from the style, but far removed from what I was thinking after looking at the can's front, but still a nice beer for the style and fairly interesting while not being outlandish. Nice to sample this one super fresh from Wisconsin, but back home! I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from Trig's Grocery in Wausau, Wisconsin on 07-August-2021 for US$1,87!!!, sampled at my house here back in Washington on 30-August-2021.

Tallboy can from a really odd grocery store. Hazy amber, large foamy off-white head, good retention. Aroma of pineapple, citrus, toasted malt. The taste is toasted malt, pine, pineapple, resin. Medium bodied, a bit old school, moderate lingering bitterness. Decent.

16 ounce can into tulip glass, no can dating. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy golden orange color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper, pine, herbal tea, honey, light caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops, jasmine tea, and moderate bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper, pine, herbal tea, honey, light caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate amount of piney/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon/orange peel, light pepper, pine, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops, jasmine tea, and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero hop astringency after the finish. Moderate amount of dryness from bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately sticky, and slightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a very nice tea spiced DIPA style. All around good robustness, complexity, and balance of citrus/pine hops, jasmine tea, and moderate bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. The tea added a lightly spicy/herbal character to the profile; and it blended well with the citrus/piney hop character and was not overdone. A very enjoyable offering.

Can. Pours a clear gold with a white head that dissipates to the edges and laces. Aroma has a combination of sweet citrus and jasmine with a bit of sweet grains underlying. Flavor is similar with more jasmine tea present and a citrus note that grows with a grain backbone.

Draft at the source. Pours a slightly cloudy dark orange with a half ding white head. Bitter with citrus and tropical fruits. Very good.

Growler thanks to Chris. Pours a cloudy gold with thick white head that lasts. The aroma is strong floral and pine. Sweet hop, and nice bitterness. Very good.

On tap at Dexters. An odd creature. Odd butter undertones. A little off. Needs work. Probably not seeing this one again. My 3.0 seems too generous.
