Originally brewed for Whole Foods. Belgian yeasts are legendary for the fruity flavor and floral bouquet they give beer. Hundreds are used by Belgian brewers and each is unique. Cru d’Or, a Belgian Style Abbey Ale is an homage to this magic ingredient and the result is a world class beer that is lush and profoundly aromatic with a warming finish. Being organic, Cru d’Or is brewed with the same reverence
for pure ingredients as the Abbey and Farmhouse Belgian ales of the past.
Delicious.

Cloudy, reddish brown color. Small white head disapates quickly. Sweet fruity malt aroma reminiscent of plums. Yeasty malt flavor with a hint of brandy. Not unpleasant but lacking in character.

Very fizzy with big bubbles in the glass, with a orangey brown color, tint of red. Smallish head. Somewhat of a cola appearance. Aroma somewhat odd. Notes of chocolate, bubblegum, raisin, but also some cardboard, pumpkin and some other vague fruitiness. Flavor smooth and heavily sweet, with more of that vague fruitiness, perhaps some cardboard, and then an unpleasant bitterness in the finish. I can’t find any age markings on the bottle, but it wouldn’t be the first old beer I’ve bought by accident in Florida. But, I’d expect an 8% belgian style to hold up. Still, this beer doesn’t really feel old, the cardboard is more like a flavor component. This is just a weird and not very appealing beer.

Bottle. Thanks to Jörgen at Oliver Twist for this one. Pours a slightly hazy amber color withan off-white head. Sweet malty yeasty and slightly fruity aroma. Sweet malty yeasty and bitter spicy flavor. Has a sweet malty spicy finish.

Cru d’Or Organic Belgian Style Ale
Beautiful amber color; poor head. Some malt and a lot of caramel; low bitterness, and without character, not really Belgian Style.

Deep dark sugary malt aroma. Tinge of cooked brown sugar. Hazy cream coffee color with an off-white head that laced lightly into oblivian. With strong light the color is actually ripe reddish stone fruit or red amber (my eyes are dilated at the moment). Medium bodied, thickening as the almost non-existant carbonation leaves. This is dark fruits with brown sugar and caramel or toffee candy. The darkness is in the finish along with a suggestion of hop. There is some spiciness. Overall this is the "stout" of belgian browns.

Rated August 2006. Clear light amber color with vanishing tan head. I smell sugar, beat sugar I think and maybe a whiff of hops. Very sugary taste. I get mostly beat sugar and possibly candi sugar. The label lists the ingredients as: “water, organic malt, hops.” Not sure how this is beer without yeast in there somewhere. Plus they left off the adjuncts that are the major flavors here. Basically I don’t like this beer. Nothing in there at all to balance all the adjunct flavors. Not recommended.

Cloudy amber/brown color, minimal head - caramel, plum and fig in the aroma - oily mouthfeel - yeasty, dough flavor at first, with a mild spiciness, almost like christmas cookies - some ripe red grapes and raisins - warming alcohol in the finish - pretty good for a beer designed for, and marketed towards, yuppies.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Pours a slightly hazy, dark amber with a small, off-white head. Malty, sweetish nose. Full-bodied with lots of caramel and roasted malt. Some almost sherry-like accents and a warming alcohol. No bitterness. A pleasant beer. Thanks to Degarth for sharing. 030406

A dark ruby color. Aroma is weak. I am hard on Belgian style brews and this one was a poo imitation. The flavor is reminiscent of a Belgian but cheap. Actually, the aftertast is a little disgusting. Pass on this one.

Murky orange-red body, thin off-white head. Full, almost intensely fruity aroma, with emphasis on cherry, plum, and banana, in addition to toast, caramel, and spices. Complex. The body emphasizes toast and spicy esters, with vinous characteristics and a warming alcohol presence. Drier than the aroma suggested. An interesting beer. Thanks Walt!
