Originally an Against the Grain Brewery and Brouwerij De Molen collaboration beer. For the first incarnation, De Molen head brewer Menno Oliver hopped in a muscle car and drove straight through from the Netherlands to Louisville, KY (that’s USA folks) to brew this bourbon inspired ale, and we liked it so much, we decided to do it again. We took the ingredients in bourbon whiskey (Barley, Rye, Corn) and then smoked them with cherry wood and brewed a huge imperial stout with them. Then to top it off we aged it in Pappy VanWinkle Bourbon Barrels. The resulting beer is rich, smokey and complex, with a bourbon character of caramel, vanilla and spice. Bottle has orange reddish orange wax top. Only the first version was aged in Pappy barrels.

Bottle, 2013, thanks to Peter! Pours clear black, large tan head, dissipates slowly, good lacing. Aroma is really in the molasses directlion, cocoa, tobacco, bourbon, vanilla, black licorice. Flavor is pretty sweet, light bitter, rich molasses and anise flavors along with bourbon, hints of smoke, but pretty light overall, more like a dark roastiness. Very well integrated and really smooth. Full body, a bit less creamy than the best but still quite nice. This is an outstanding impy.

Review form memory. An excellent RIS, roasted malts, cocoa, coffee, caramel and a very nice barrel sourness to top it off. Smooth mouthfeel with minimum carbonation.

Bottle at tasting. Black pour. Delicious aroma of milky chocolate, vanilla booze, mild smoke and red fruit. Fantasticly rich taste of mild smoke, roasted malt, coffee, red fruit, vanilla bourbon booze, ripe red fruit and a subtle spicey afterburn. Rich long complex finish. This is really amazing.

Bottle, 75cl. A dark brown beer topped by a small, dense, light brown head. The aroma is lightly bourbonish, with coconut and licorice, alcohol notes, some dark chocolate and coffee. The flavor has some alcohol, it’s lightly warming, full-bodied and with a smooth carbonation. Licorice, some smoke and bourbon, some dried fruits, some coffee and chocolate. Some woody hints and a touch of brown sugar. Lovely indeed. Pretty wonderful this one, sure wouldn’t mind drinking this one again. 160213

75cl bottle at Sandar Haandverksbryggeri - Brygghuset, Sandefjord. Pours hazy dark brown with a lasting beige head. Sweet, vinous and fairly malty with notes of dried fruits, malt some wooden notes and a nice acidity. Tasty, vinous and enjoyable!

Lots of smoked peat here. Lots. Some roast coffee and some dark chocolate and caramel. Black pour with good head and lacing. Quite bitter. Some booze. Not bad but not super well balanced for my tastes. Creamy consistency rather than syrupy. Tap at Churchkey.
