Spanning & Sensatie was intended to thrill your taste buds. We tried to achieve this by adding cacao, chili peppers and salt to an already powerful imperial stout. Have fun. Flavor indication: cacao, chocolate, chili, salt. Translates as Excitement & Sensation or in meaning Thrills & Spills.

I know two things: De Molen can’t make a decent IPA. De Molen can make an imperial Stout. This offering has a nose featuring dank woodiness, chocolate, dark berries and coffee. The taste is similar but nicely complex, including light cocao, a hint of heat from chilli peppers, lush dark berries, a hint of sourness, prunes, raisins and plums, all underpinned by an undercurrent of heavily roasted malt. Coffee is understated, but it is there as well. Low carbonation and a rich body add to the enjoyment of this lively IS

Bottle at home. Aroma is sweet cocoa, dark chocolate, dark roasted malt, coffee, hint of dark fruits and liqourice, a slight touch of chili pepper towards the end. Flavour is medium sweet with a nice roasty bittersweet finish. Body is full and somewhat creamy. Not extreme in any way, but very rich and well-balanced. Delicious chocolate-heavy Stout.

Roasted and smoked aroma. Black color, small beige head. Mild sweetness and a bit stronger bitterness. No taste of chilli. Full body, thick texture, bitter aftertaste.

Tap, at Borefts 2023 as vintage. Black color with beige head. Aroma is good roast and chocolate, tobacco, dash soy. Taste is chocolate, mild umami, good roast, not too bitter, but not too sweet either, chili and salt has almost completely faded. Oily mouthfeel, low carbonation. Solid!

At Borefts, opaque black, coffee, mellow roast notes, charred hints, some umami quite dry with a light sweetness.. Nice , not complex

At a tasting, thanks DSG, opaque very dark brown, woody aroma with some roastiness, floweriness, sausauge and something metalic, flavour of coffee, milk chocolate, fudge, smoke in the back and just a whiff of chilie and chocolate, a bit too light bodied. Off centre and quite enjoyable.

Bottle (bottled 04/06/2012, sampled 15/01/2021): Nearly black, small tanned foamy layer, solid both sweet and bitter aroma of roasted malt, molasses and chocolate-cake, presumably some dried berries underneath; robust sweet and sourish flavour, full bodied - as expected; increasing bitterness and traces of warming alcohol in the drier roasty-chocolatey and peppery finish. O.K., surely not my favourite Imp-Stout...

330ml bottle. Poured a clear dark brown colour with a thin broken off white head. The aroma is roasty malt, molasses, over-ripe red berry fruits and alcohol. The flavour is moderate sweet, with a smooth, light roasty, liqourice, light boozy alcohol, subtle chilli pepper palate. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.
