Our interpretation of an Extra Special Bitter carries light bitterness and a gentle earthy noble hop character from Fuggles hops. The hops are balanced by an airy fruitiness and a rich base of flavors evoking caramel malts, brown sugar, and hazelnut. It is a wonderful and simple beer we find best paired with fish and chips, smoked meat, roasted chicken or, ideally, a day on the river.

Pours a moderately dark brown, with big, white head that dissipates fairly quickly. Aroma is malt, hops, bread. Flavor follows. Crisp mouthfeel. Moderately bitter finish.
Earlier Rating: 9/17/2017 Total Score: 3.7
Pours an only slightly hazy, copper-gold, with little in the way of head. Floral aroma, with some grassiness. Flavor is grassy, nutty, bready, and just a bit fruity. Pretty good approximation of the style.

Pours a lovely glowing russet from a can. Big initial caramel malt aroma floats away, leaving little finish; similar flavor, a little sweet with little bitterness. Good beer.

Can (2/17/20) pour from the brewery, Charlton. Appearance is pretty, lightly hazy, amber red with nice sparkle, 2-finger width foamy beige head with fair retention and trace lacing. Aroma is strong caramel and bread, mild fruit. Taste is moderately strong sweet fruit and caramel, mineral water with bready malt backbone. Mouthfeel is light-to-medium bodied with smooth, frothy texture, soft-to-average carbonation with crisp, dry finish with lingering mild bitterness. Overall, a good representative of the style. Nothing to get too excited about but executed well.

On tap at the brewery. Pours brown. Biscuit, caramel, cherry, raspberry, plum, little estery. Obviously could do with being on handpull, since I'm an angry Englishman, but it's a really well balanced example of the style.

Can from Chris: pours a dull light brown with off-white head. Aroma is toffee, caramel, some earthiness. Taste is sweet, malty. Body is pretty smooth. Pretty solid ESB.

16oz can pours out a rusty brown topped with a sand head. Nose is nice nutty grain notes some light grassy hops. Taste is more of the nutty wood notes some light earthy hops and a little sweetnes.
