Ouden Vat is a member of the Flemish Red family. It is the result of a well-thought blend of different Brett-refermented and lactic bacteria-refermented ales. It has aged on wooden barrels for over a year. What you get is an ideal compromise between a complex and refreshing beer.
It has a dark amber colour, with a hint of ruby. It is beautifully clear, thanks to her long maturation, and her foam is extremely fine. Although she contains no fruit at all, she has a very fruity nose, dominated by cherries on alcohol and some woodiness. In the mouth, she has a well-maintained acidity, complimented by a wonderful creaminess. Her light saturation makes her an easily digestible beer. Among its flavours we recognise griottes cherries, blackberries, prunes from Agen, and blueberries. We also find caramel, and a slight roasty touch. Her finale is very round and brings us back to blueberries.

Bottle. Etre. Light haze on a coppery plum colour. Fine and dense, off white head. Nose is very vinous and woody. Some cola notes. Some vanilla. Taste sets off sweet, turning dry and lightly acidic. Smooth mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. Pretty dry and lightly acidic. Finishes in a similar vein.

BO 08/10/2019, BB 08/10/2021, 330ml bottle bought at the La Cave à Bières d'Etre Gourmet; Barrel aged Flemish Ale
APPEARANCE: deep amber color with ruby and chestnut like hues, mild chill haze under the light; beige fairly lasting head, beautiful lacing
AROMA: spot on Flanders Red on the nose; smooth sweet balsamic vinegar mixed with stewed apples and caramelized brown sugar, mild caramel, sugared plain yogurt underneath, bread crumbs, notes of fresh bread dough, mild red wine tartness on the edges, no vinegar sharpness, light barrel dryness (low notes of wood), subtle red fruit and berries here and there, subtle funk but very minimal
FLAVOR: moderate carbonation, fluffy bubbles but also light creamy texture, medium light body, fairly tannic and drying mouthfeel with soft tartness; light sweetness of brown sugar and syrup at the beginning cut by light balsamic vinegar, no obvious acidic harshness, lactic & yoghurt notes at the backend; a lot of tannic bitterness and dryness from the barrels, very subtle impressions of solvent, no funk dirtiness on the palate; less fruit forward as suggested on the nose - I got notes of tart apples and sugared lemon; with sediment slightly sweeter and fuller on the palate
OVERALL: nicely drinkable with all boxes checked, harmonious with more tannic structure as more traditional Flanders Red beers, no sharpness despite noticeable balsamic character

Bottle from Bine & Vine. Pours very dark ruddy copper with a foamy beige head. Aroma of Brett and wood. Med body or better. Flavor is oak, malt of a rare flavor, and Brett. For me, sour isn't really in the mix. As ever, Brett saves the ale. Superb.

Bottle. Hazy reddish-brown color with beige head. Aroma is tobacco, leather, wood, balsamico, some cherries. Taste is nice cherries, again the woody leathery flavours, not too tart, well-balanced. Obviously not the best, but a well-made Oud Bruin, not too complex, just good.

Clear amber brown, stable frothy off-white head, good retention, light lacing. Sour aroma, sour cherries, vinegar, wood, fortified wine. Relatively mild sweet and sour taste, red fruit, wood, brett. Medium body, watery texture, soft carbonation, lingering mild sweet and sour aftertaste, bitter notes, wood presence till the end, excellent.

Bottle from Etre Gourmet. It pours hazy mahogany brown with a thick and lasting beige head. The aroma is earthy, woody, leather, tangy, vinous, red fruits, cherry, grape, brambles, jam, victoria sponge cake, must and funk. The taste is sweet - sour, dry, toothy, deep funk, must, damp wood, mouldy basement, earthy, some bitterness, leather, light tannin, vinous, red wine, cherry, cranberry, jammy fruits, dried leaves and some spice with a drying, funky finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Quite a funky musty number. Decent.
