In 19th century Germany, pilsners were all the rage so München brewers created a malty hoppy beer of their own called Helles. pFriem Helles Lager builds on that history with a toasty lager that’s savory and smooth with aromas of fresh bread and a hint of honey. So let’s toast this beer’s storied and delicious history with a hearty, “Helles Yeah!”.

On tap at the brewery. One hell of a helles. Pours a totally clear yellow color with a large white head. A bready lemon citrus nose. The flavor is toasted malts, light citrus, crisp floral nose. Very smooth. I could drink a few liters. Awesome.

Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver, 14 oz
Hazy dark blond color with small compact head. The aroma is lightly grassy, the malt flavor is mellow, with a hay accent, a bit sweeter than the Helles I’m used to, with just a little hop grassy touch.
Quite simple, I expected more from pFriem.

Golden. Malty, fresh biscuity malts, light toastiness, and a full assertive finish.

On tap at pFriem, pours a clear copper with a small white head. Aroma of very light herbal notes and a little grass. Flavour is very subtle, with lightly toasted malt and light herbal notes. Very sessionable and easy drinking, but very bland and uninspiring. Decent.

Tap at pFriem, Hood River, 24/05/13. Clear pale golden with a thin white head. Nose is cereals, corn, grass, light caramel. Taste comprises citrus, caramel, pale malts, light bread dough, grass. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, crisp finish with a hint of bitterness. Clean drinking Helles - decent enough representation of the style.
