We have been using coffee in beer for years. What began with Bomb! eventually made an appearance in Okie and Noir. Roast and chocolate and dark flavors dominated these beers. They were what most people would expect from a coffee beer. While loving these beers we also knew we could do a lot more with coffee. We knew there was an array of flavors in coffee and beer that would be great together. We wanted to take a different approach.
Prison Rodeo is that approach to coffee and beer. We started with a beer (maybe it was an IPA) full of juicy and citrus hops. It was about as far as we could get from a stout. We needed a coffee to stand up to and compliment the hops. We needed a coffee that was just as fruity and refreshing. Our friends at Spaceship Earth Coffee sourced multiple samples for us to pick from. After cupping numerous coffees this natural-process Ethiopia Sidamo Guji really stood out. We could tell the coffee was going to add another dimension to the beer.
We were careful to add just enough coffee to amplify but not dominate the beer. In the glass the beer is full of those bright, delicate fruit aromas before fading into a slight but noticeable roast aroma.

Bottle sample at a tasting at troubles' place. Thanks Stas. Hazy deep golden. Lots of coffee, a bit vegetal, hops, sweetish malt, bitter finish, medium-bodied. OK, not really my thing.

From a 355ml bottle on 28/4/2018. Pours a hazy medium golden with a smallish head. has a light coffee nose. Flavour wise, it's got quite a bit of citrus sweetness up front, followed by some pretty firm fruity hops, with a distinct but still quite delicate coffee flavour rounding things off. Full bodied with moderate carbonation. While very flavoursome, I wouldn't pick it as 9.5%. A very enjoyable, well balance imperial coffee ale.

American strong ale from this celebrated craft brewery in Oklahoma, flavored with Ethiopian coffee. Bottle from Beergium, slightly less than a year old. Irregular but firm, dense, billowy lacing, eggshell-white head slowly dissolving in the middle but clinging tightly to the edge, over a near-clear, warm orange blonde beer with olive greenish tinge, misty and deeper orange with sediment but remaining beautiful and warm. Expressive bouquet of candied orange peel, almond, strawberry, indeed aromatic coffee (as in light roast coffee beans) fitting in well without overpowering, mango, persimmon, paprika-flavored potato chips, peanuts, peaches marinated in moscato wine, cheese rind, ginger powder, fresh pink grapefruit, fresh stevia leaves, overripe papaja, unsmoked cigarette tobacco and already some vague but identifiable, onsetting 'rusty' oxidation lurking in the background. Sweet, juicy onset, clean but nevertheless expressing outspoken mango, lychee and tangerine notes, very soft sourish lining, softish carb, slick and bit oily mouthfeel, which - due to the low-ish carb - feels thinner than expected of a beer bordering on the 10% ABV limit. After a soft intermezzo of slick, caramel sweet, biscuity malts, a more serious phase unfolds, with a notable grapefruit peel-like, long-lasting, resinous hop bitterness and the expected coffee showing up at the back of the mouth, lightly roasted and elegantly accentuating the hop bitterness rather than clashing with it; the degree of actual hop bitterness has - for a blonde American ale - been kept relatively soft-ish, so as to seek, and finally find, balance with the soft, aromatic, spicy bitterness brought on by the coffee. Alcohol, however, appears before its time, quite forcefully trying to disrupt this delicious play of sweet biscuity malts, grapefruity hops and delicately aromatic coffee - its whisky-like wryness sticking to the mouth and tongue, even burning with a peppery effect, almost as if chili peppers have been added. Still, the marriage of hops, malts and coffee survives beyond this alcohol spiciness, and a warming, soothing feeling is left in the chest as the beer went downwards. And so the final conclusion is easily drawn: another great artisanal Prairie ale, in which clearly much thought went into how a firm, citrusy American hoppiness is best paired with a delicately bittering and aromatic coffee effect. Not my first modern New World style hoppy ale flavored with coffee, though these are still very rare, but a beautifully balanced, highly profiled beer. Just too bad for the alcohol, which at 9.5% ABV is boozier, harsher and hotter than it should have been, bringing this delicacy a bit out of balance.

355ml bottle. Murky, orangey, dark golden colour with average, thick, frothy to creamy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Coffee aroma with slightly surpressed, citrusy hoppy notes, hints of lemon and grapefruit. Taste is citrusy hoppy, slightly delayed coffee support, hints of orange, lemon, grapefruit; creamy texture, smooth and soft palate. Not completely harmonious and integrated.

12 oz bottle @ home. Mostly clear deep golden color. Big white head with good retention. Aroma's: fruity, sweetish, sweet fruit, spices. Retronasal there suddenly is coffee, spices, sweetness. Flavor is moderate sweet, spices, light bitter. Warming alcohol. Medium bodied. Long finish, mildly bitter. Interesting.
