By the time ESB launched in 1971, breweries had long been in the habit of producing an ‘ordinary’ bitter and a ‘special’. Our special was the irreplaceable London Pride so we broke the mould and added a pioneering third style: an extra special bitter, brewed to a stronger 5.5% ABV. Since then, ESB has gone on to become a recognised beer style, imitated in breweries right across the world.

On cask at London's Pride Pub & Kitchen - Heathrow Terminal 2, pours a clear copper amber with a small white head. Aroma is soft, with breasy malt, light toasted caramel, and faint hopping. Flavour is malty, with plenty of dry bready malt, toasted caramel, and a touch of hopping. Bready and malty finish. Classic ESB that I somehow never rated on cask.

Deep golden copper with very little head A - caramel and light marmalade F - mostly caramel and toffee malts with slight marmalade bitterness and a tiny bit of banana on the finish it's a decent strong bitter but there's better ones out there

Scanning the bar code on the bottle leads here. Mahagony/tea pour with a small white head. Aromas of sweet citrus, toffee, orange peel, berries, plums. Taste is malt, caramel/toffee, candied fruit. Enjoyed it.

Toffee malt and hay aroma. Dark amber wtih nice head. Moderately sweet nutty toffee malt and mildly bitter hay flavor. Good body.
