Can from the brewery. Opaque dark brown pour with a good sized fluffy dark tan head that hangs around for a while and leaves tight lace all the way down. Nose is equal (large) parts pine resin, chocolate, coffee and smaller but healthy doses of roasted nuts and toast. Also has some floral notes and hints of vanilla with a mild citrus undertone. Taste is great bitterness with only a slight molasses sweetness. Mouth is full and oily with average carbonation and a lingering bitter finish. Alcohol is dangerously well integrated and appears a s a slight heat in the finish. 9/5-/8/4/17

Carbonatation moyenne, corps moyen-dense.

Always late to the party, has everyone had this but me? Can from the brewery. Pours a inky black with only a sheeting of off-white head. Nose heavy with, what is that?, summit hops? Heavy resin, onions nose. Taste is similarly heavy with the hops. Big resins, bitterness with heavy toasted malts, some sweetness. Whatever that hops is, it isn’t my favourite. (It’s a favourite of Bellwoods) I suspect when I look at my list of followees they’re rate it better than me. But to each his own.

Can: Poured a deep black color ale with a nice off-white foamy head with good retention and great lacing. Aroma of citrusy hops with light roasted malt notes is quite pleasant. Taste is also dominated by roasted malt notes with quite bit of green citrusy hops with medium bitterness level. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Well brewed but hops profile could be even more dominant.

A dark brown DIPA with a thin lacing brown head. In aroma, a beautiful fragrant mix of floral hops and citrus pulp, light meaty notes, light mint. In mouth, a nice bitter chocolate malt with resinous floral hops, grapefruit pulp, balanced and pleasing. On tap at Brother’s Beer Bistro.

500mL can, sent from wilco (thanks Mike), pours black with a big foamy tan head. Aroma of butterscotch, roasted malts, and floral and citrus hops. Flavour is wonderful, bringing out a delicate balance between malts and hops - the malt coming across as a bit butterscotch-like with a bit of roast, crossed with scorching citrus hops. There's a bit of caramel malt and chocolate in there to match the hop blast. Finishes on notes of caramel / butterscotch and citrus hops. Excellent black IPA.

(Draught at The Alibi, Kingston ON, Jan 17 2013) Pours cola coloured with a small but lacy tan head. Aroma of pine needles and resin, a little grapefruit, dark malts but little roast, fairly strong but not overpowering, with no alcohol. Flavour is a real mix of malts and hops flavours, strong overall. Resiny pine over top of rich dark malts, toffee and molasses, citrus, and just a little roast coming through. Sweet malt core matched by big hop bitterness, finishes quite dry and bitter with a bit of sweetness and little alcohol heat. Palate is full, oily with moderate carbonation. A good American strong ale with big malts, but not what I’d call a black IPA with the relative lack of roast. The 25th Ann. Imperial Black IPA is a better in that regard but this is a good beer in its own right.
