Cooked corn, spicy yeast, tart fruit. Sweet, Belgian spice, corn all over, moderate but harsh bitterness.

Was quite surprised when I picked this one up at the IGA, that it was brewed by Brasseurs RJ. Looks like a Unibroue product (Big 750ml bottle, cork and cage) except for the front label, giving it away. Smells beautiful at first, with cereal (rye, wheat) grains, Belgian Ale yeast and loads of spices. Then, the hop starts up, with some grass and rusty notes. Golden colour with a hazy created from the small tiny particules floating around. Big foamy warm cap that stays long and gives out soapy lacing. The mouthfeel is pretty standard wetness, medium-bodied, with just a little warming effect. Very violent mid-sized bubbles for carbonation. Flavours are mild and all over the place. Mild dryness, bitterness, grass, Belgian yeast, spicy malts and grains. Pretty damn good for RJ, but just missing the nice blend for the taste. Might be a good thing to cellar one.

Bouteille 750ml. De couleur dorée-ambrée et voilée. Nez de levures fruitées (agrumes sucrées, notes d’abricots et de pêches) et épicées (coriandre, léger de poivre), de pain et de céréales sucrées, moyen de houblon herbeux, légèrement floral et aux faibles notes citriques avec des notes de miel. Moyenne-ronde en bouche avec un pétillement moyen ainsi qu’une texture légèrement crémeuse et aux petites notes huileuses. Goût de levures fruitées (agrumes sucrées, notes de pêches, traces d’abricots), épicées (coriandre, moyen de poivre doux) et aux notes terreuses lors de l’entrée en bouche auquel se rajoute un goût de céréales sucrées, léger de pain et avec des notes de miel. Parallèlement, l’on retrouve une moyenne amertume de houblon herbeux (herbes fraîches et mouillées), légèrement citrique et aux notes floral avec un léger goût d’alcool doux et ce, jusqu’en finale. Post-goût moyen-long et plutôt sec, composé d’un goût de levures fruitées (zeste d’agrumes, pelures d’abricots) avec une légère amertume de houblon herbeux aux notes citriques et quelques traces d’alcool. Bottle: Poured a hazy bright hay color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of floral hops with nice rustic malt profile. Taste is a great mix between some floral hops with some rustic malt notes and light lingering sweetness notes. Body is quite full with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Solid mix between a Belgian ale and a IIPA though a touch more of hops would have provided further enjoyment.

Aroma: Very spicy notes, pepper, cinamon, cloves. A slight caramel is showing but spices are covering all up. Sub accents of sugar cane are also trying to stick out. Very spicy nose but pleasant. Appearance: Average frothy white head diminishing fast. Cloudy medium yellow hue. Taste: Attack is very spicy with lots of pepper. Hop bitterness is well integrated to flavors making it spicy and bitter. Alcohol is just right. Malt is supporting flavors with sugar accents. Finish is all bitterness and long lasting. An excellent beer, another success with this summer’s Hefeweisen. I think they’re going in the right direction with their latest new beers.Nevertheless, I find it a bit too spicy for my taste.. I was expecting hops to stick out more.
