New England’s Original IPA | As enjoyable today as it was in ‘93, IPA is a regional favorite and a craft beer classic. Styled after an English IPA but brewed with distinctly American hops, it’s citrusy, refreshing, and perfectly balanced– as perfect on a Cape Cod beach as it is in a VT ski lodge or Boston dive bar.

Much better than I figured a harpoon in my stomach would be...

From a 12 oz. can. Pours a clear gold with an off white head. Aroma of citrus and green onion. Oily mouthfeel. Grass flavors. Bitter finish.

Beer is okay, nothing special. Poured with a sudsy off white head and a clear amber color. Aroma was just basic hoppy and malty. Tasted malty, hoppy, and bitter sweet. Decent body. Slightly bitter finish and drinkable. Not especially memorable.

Keg at A back-alley boozer in Mayfair. It pours clear amber with a substantial off-white head. The aroma is pretty pleasant - sweet, sticky, juicy, plenty of orange marmalade, peach and some pine on the back-end. The taste is bitter - sweet, pine, toasted grain, some grass, orange marmalade, toffee and a touch of spice with a drying finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. I imagine this was pretty stand-out beer back in the day, but in 2016 it is pretty damn average. Remains drinkable.

355ml bottle. Crystal clear, amber colour with small to average, thick, frothy to creamy, fairly lasting and lacing, white head. Slightly citrusy and minimally grassy, hoppy aroma, hints of lemon tea, a touch of dried banana. Taste is minimally citrusy hoppy, caramel malty basis, hints of lemon tea, dry finish with a slightly strange touch of dried banana, banana leaves.

355ml bottle. Clear golden orange with a one-two finger white head, good lacing and retention. Aroma of floral citrus hops, pale malt. Taste of citrus floral hops, sweetish malts, hardly any bitterness for an IPA. Flavours are more malty than hoppy. Medium body, medium carbonation. It’s alright but not noteworthy.

Tap at New York Sports Bar in JFK. Clear light copper-gold with full white head that is chunky. Beyond that, my west coast bias doesn’t allow me to to get the plot - ever - on these malty IPAs. Boring and one dimensional.
