Kees & Menno thought about malts. Smoked malts as the base malt for a new brew… Smoked malt from Bamberg to be precise. The choice of base malt was unanimous. But (headstrong who?) they wanted to make two different beers with it. March 14th 2017was Imperial Stout (Frack & Frick) day at our place, April 12th was Barley Wine (Frick & Frack) day at Brouwerij Kees!' place. Try them alongside to taste the obvious differences and unavoidable similarities.

Bottle, 0.33l. Aroma of smoked ham, leather, rubber and roasted malt. Pitch black color with thin creamy brown head and average sparkling appearance. Taste starts with medium sweet rich roasted and smoked malt, follows by soy sauce, chocolate and licorice, mouthfeel is smooth, mild spicy, umami and slightly alcoholic, while finish is mild to medium grassy bitter. Full body, thick texture and soft carbonation in palate. Smoke and the water and much more...

Bottle. Dark brown, close to black color, light coffee foam. Aroma: smoked sausage cheese, caramel, dried fruits, very good. Taste: sweet, smoked sausage cheese, smoked salmon, coffee, port wine, dried fruits, powerful, excellent balance.

Draft. A black beer with a lazing dark brown head. The aroma has notes of smoke, dark chocolate, and roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, chocolate, alcohol, and smoke, leading to a bitter finish.

From a 330ml bottle on 11/2/2018 (BB 6/4/27). Pours close to black with a small head. Has a strong aroma of smoke and bacon, with some caramel in the background. Flavour wise, it begins sweet with lots of caramel and chocolate, followed by sweet soy, bacon, ash and smoke. Features a good dash of roasty bitterness at the back, which balances out the sweetness beautifully. The palate is syrupy with moderate carbonation. A fantastic sweet, smoky stout - bold, yet smooth, complex and moreish.

Bottled 06-04-17. Good Bamberg'y smell. Tastes smoked, but not smoke alone. Velvety smooth, quite thick. Nicely bitter, licorice and smoke.

33cl Bottle. Almost black colour, beige head. Aroma of sweet malts, smoke, peat, dark fruits, some roast, molasses. Flavour is sweet, malty, dark fruits, plums, smoke, peat, campfire, some roast, bittersweet finish. Full bodied. Good.

At a tasting, thanks, thick bubbly brown head a bit like an espresso, quite clear very dark brown color, aroma of smoked sausauge and lightly charred wood, flavor of chocolate with charred wood, smokes sausauge and dark dried fruits, light to medium prune sweetness, oily mouthfeel, Very good, highly enjoyable.

Bottle shared at a tasting at zvsn's place. Thanks Nir A. for this bottle! Black, brown head. Great aroma of smoked sausages, chocolate, roast, coffee. Sweetish flavor with chocolate, smokiness, roast, coffee, umami, a bit of dark fruits, bitter finish. Full-bodied, rounded. Great stuff.

330ml bottle. Pours an opaque black with a small, creamy, short lived, tan head that leaves spotty lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, smoke, dark chocolate and light coffee. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, dark chocolate, caramel, licorice, smoke, ash and light alcohol with a dry, mild, bitter coffee finish. Medium to full body with a creamy, smooth, oily texture and soft carbonation. Very tasty. The abv is well hidden.
