The 20th limited-edition beer in our Vintage Ale series, Vintage Ale 2016 is a rich, smooth Barley Wine that promises a distinguished drinking experience. Packaged in our signature Vintage Ale gift box, it’s a special beer inside and out, perfect as a gift or to add to your own collection.

Brewed to 8.5% , Vintage Ale 2016 brings together classic British ingredients (Challenger, Goldings and Northdown) with the aromatic Nelson Sauvin hop from New Zealand - used here both for bittering and as a dry hop.

The global combination of ingredients gives rise to a rich and complex amber beer, with aromas of sherry and Cognac, and a flavour profile that picks out toasted grains and sweet cherry Bakewell Tart.

Bottle drunk 9/18/25.
Clear, dark mahogany. Medium-sized, beige head.
Caramel, raisins, vanilla and plenty of oxidation though it's not problematic. Very fruity yeast, of course, and a touch of toast. Lots of cellar and mineral and funk.
Wow that's a lot maltier than I was expecting! Brown sugar, dates and figs with light but good acidity to balance. Soft and succulent. This has become a lot more brown malted and less red fruit and yeast-forward since the last one I had (2001). Nice to see this is still a well-made beer. Maybe a bit heavy on the brown sugar and date-like sweetness, but otherwise lovely.

500ml bottle from the lcbo. Clear dark copper pour with a big off white, beige head. Aroma is as usual, very bready. Big notes of toffee and caramel and dark malted grain. This year the hop bill isn’t as pungent, it’s more subtle and delicate. Light grass hints of orange peel and hints of white grape, and green tea. Beautiful mouth feel and carb. Finish is medium bitter, grassy, green hop presence, with loads of toffee to round it out. I don’t see this aging Welll, but a it’s quite nice now.

Aroma is toffee, golden syrup, dried fruits, biscuit, malt, fruit cake, orange, bready, boozy edge. Fairly sweet, with moderate bitterness and a very slight boozy tart edge. Medium body, average to soft carbonation. Enjoyed this.

Bottle at home in Hackney. Pours faintly cloudy ruddy red-brown with a small, frothy khaki head. Medium sweet flavour with nice stewed berries, smooth toffee, bready malts, mild oxidation, caramel, dates. Medium bodied with fine carbonation toon. Soft warmth to finish, subtle earthy hops, more stewed fruits, berries, lightly toasted malts. Aging well. Very well.
