Out of the deepest night shines a sliver of light. In making Nocturna we age a silky stout in bourbon barrels with vanilla beans. In the darkness of the barrel a transformation occurs, the beer fills with a galaxy of roasty and sweet aromatics: toffee, chocolate, oak. Experience for yourself this momentous meeting of darkness and light.

Reviewed from notes.
Bottle to snifter.
Appearance: black in color with a thin cap of a little khaki foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: chocolate, sweet oak, vanilla, animal crackers, toffee, some earthiness; light coffee
Flavor: blends the prior noted aromas to a fine sweet blend; finishes slightly dry with the chocolate, vanilla and earthiness
Texture: medium bodied, good sipper; light smoothness and also some dryness running along the tongue
Overall: pretty nicely done impy stout I would have again.

Sample (thanks omhper!). Black colour, small beigeish brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, some toffee, mild alcohol and some earthy tones. Flavour is roasted, chocolaty, floral, some herbal, mild nectary and some toffee tones with a bunch of coffee as well. Long roasted and somewhat sweetish dark dried fruity tones in the aftertaste.

--Bottled, from Systembolaget. -- Black, huge lively head. Faint vanilla aroma with slight caramel. Sweet with medium to full body and rounded mouthfeel. Caramelly with some vanilla. Diluted and artificial. Insipid and infantile. Why vanilla??

Not bad, just a bit light and sweet, much like Allagash Black. Notes of milk chocolate, candi sugar, cola, and light roast coffee, with bourbon and a solid oak bitterness on the finish. Body is light for the style. Eh.

Toffee, roast and vanilla. Some bourbon but well tempered. Black pour with decent head. Silky smooth mouthfeel. Pretty good balance, and an easy drinking stout especially for an imperial. Bitter finish with a little caramel and a touch of barrel. Tap at Sovereign.

Bottle from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours dark brn/blk with a large creamy beige head. Aromas of toffee, vanilla and bourbon. Med body. Flavor is bourbon, dark toffee, vanilla and chocolate notes. Not undry. Bitter. Something like a heavy duty scharzbier.

A 12 oz bottle of Nocturna from an appreciated brewer. This tasting gets one of my TX breweries' snifters. The arrival is one shade short of totally black with a representative, thin layer of fawn-tan foam. The scent fills the room, boozy chocolate and dark fruit, some grain too. The taste is nice, more subdued than expected. There is semi-sweet chocolate, whole grain bread, roastiness, woodiness, just a touch of vanilla and none of the bourbon I was looking for. A fair bitterness concluding. Again, nice beer, I had greater expectations.

5 oz draft. Aroma has soft bourbon with vanilla. Body is decent with respectable coffee with vanilla and a easy lingering bourbon finish. Booze is under control. Nice!
