Munich-Style Helles

Paulus (pronounced Pow'loos) is typical of the highly drinkable golden lagers brewed for fall Bavarian festivals. Malt forward with Noble hops to provide balance, Paulus reminds us of some of the great times we've had in Munich. Prost!

16oz can pours a clear gold with some clumpy, white head. Nose has some paper or oxidation off the top, then malt, bread dough, some paint, some esters. Flavor is better, malt, yeast, dough, soggy crackers, some straw. A bit earthy too. Finishes medium bodied and dry.

Was craving nice clean yellow lager and this hit the spot. Bright clear gold and medium white head. Nose is bread and faint citrus. Tastes of bread, crackery, earth, white pepper light lemon on finish. Lively. Enjoyable.

Clear straw body, effervescent carbonation, huge pillowy off-white head. Aroma biscuity, toasty, and grainy with grassy hops. Body light, bready, and modestly sweet, with grain and floral-grassy hops. Crisp and flavorful with a moderately bitter finish. Hits on all points.

Can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a clearish straw gold with a finger of fluffy white head that lingers. Light peppery hop aromas with some mineral and faint herbal aromas. Grassy and mineral focused on the nose with lingering pepper on the finish. Soft mouthfeel with great carbonation throughout.

Can (12/8/20?--date stamp over edge of can) pour from trade with Johnnnniee--thanks, John! It's a clear, golden yellow with nice effervescent sparkle, finger-width foamy white head with fair retention and no lacing. Aroma is rich brown bread malt along with more classic European malts. Taste is pilsner malts and lemon, golden delicious apple and yeast. Mouthfeel is light-to-medium bodied with smooth texture, average carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, this is about as excited as I can get for a Helles. At least there's some complexity here and/or a real richness besides boring pilsner/European malts. Nicely done.

16 oz. can. Aroma is cracker pilsner malts, yeast, minerals. Taste is soft cracker malts fading to yeast and maybe light apple. Palate is light bodied normal carbonation and very clean finish. Overall, spot on the style and clean.

Pours hazy gold into a shaker. Bright white head with little retention recedes to nothing. Sweet caramel and hay aromas. Soft with sourdough, citrus and caramel upfront turning to dry earth in the medium length finish.

Crowler from the brewery filled today. A bit of haze in a bright yellow beer that has a tightly bubbled white head that dissipates almost instantly. Rich bready crackery malt on the nose and flavor with bits of floral spice and earthy hops to counter. Extremely clean fermentation profile, damn tasty Largahhh!

Draught at the brewery, 4/29/16.
Clear goldenrod with a small white head that shows moderate to poor retention.
Lots of grain/cereal in the nose with only an afterthought of light, dusty, minimally herbal hops. Clean, with some seltzer-like minerality and a hint of honey.
Quite watery, as it should be for its size, with light to moderate carbonation. Good attenuation, actually a lot lighter than most helles I usually have, coming off more like a very light pilsner (though minus the higher hop rates of that one). Not to say a helles has to be super malty, and this one does have some lovely cereal notes, with light sourdough, mild lemon and hints of biscuit and dry vanilla. But I could use just a bit more maltiness in texture. Otherwise, clean and with no alcohol noted.
