Modernism is inspired by the Czech black lager tradition. It features a deep complexity from the decoction process and a hop schedule typical of Bohemian beers. Notes of dark malts, bittersweet chocolate and caramel dominate. The finish is dry.

I will say this, I like dark ales, black IPAs and dark lagers. I just do. So now I have a 16 oz can of Modernism obtained from Half Time where I get my east coast brews mostly. A tulip glass is in place and I tilt the can. A shiny, dark brown body completed by a thin but persistent skim of taupe foam. I smell plenty of grain, malt and some scorched toast. Not a bad start but the taste is even better. Dark malts, cereal, a touch of caramel sweetness that offsets some bitterness and then some charred wood. Top of the heap in the style for me I believe.

16 oz. can. Pours clear, dark, brown, with a big, foamy, beige head. The nose is spruce, toffee, marigold, pumpernickel, and burnt toast. Dry and roasted, with an acrid bitterness. Light body, sticky, and a bit watery. Fair.

On tap at The Three Monkeys in NYC. Dark brown pour. Creamy tan ring. Roasted malt nose is mild. Flavor is roasted malt, earthy grain and Baker’s Chocolate. Smooth and flavorful. Spot on interpretation for the style.
