Bottle from Sandersput, Ninove. Impressions of raw liquorice, prune, raisin, chicory, fondant, mocha, tobacco. Taste has sweet prune, raisin & pear; quite herbal & spicy in a toasty malt body with a roasted hint of chicory coffee. Herbal hoppy finish, more dried fruit, toast and warming brown rum-like alcohol. Pleasant revisit of this oddly named 'Extra Dubbel'; still very much recommended. (Updated 21/06/2022)

Original rating:
29 April 2018, at Zythos Bierfestival. Deputy Taster: Anke.
Hazy dark brown, almost black, with a small, foamy, tan head. Strong aroma of raisin, candied banana, light roasted malt, caramel, licorice, some coffee roast & chocolate. It tastes medium to heavy malty sweet with chocolate & caramel notes, and light roasted bitter. Dry, more toasty finish with herbal hops and warming liqueur alcohol. Medium body, creamy/syrupy texture, fizzy carbonation. A Quad without a doubt, and a well-made one too.

Hobby brew now apparently commercialized through Pirlot. Shared by tderoeck. Moussy, pale greyish beige head, forming flat ’islands’ in the middle but well-retaining around the edge; hazy caramel brown robe with ruddy mahogany tinge. Aroma of caramel candy, dried plums, brown sugar, banana, candied dates, molten candi sugar, rum, sugared tea, liquorish, cloves, hazelnuts - but no off-flavours. Fruity onset but in a relatively ’clean’ kind of way, banana ester, peach, pear, touch of fig-like sourishness, medium carbo, smooth and full body. Thick caramelly and pleasantly nutty maltiness with a soft toasted bitterish edge, residual brown sugary sweetness on top, touch of spicy phenols, earthy and mildly spicy hop bitter ’kiss’ in the end - followed by a quite strong, wodka-like alcohol afterglow, becoming a bit wry in the end; toasted maltiness lingers after swallowing. Quadrupel-style Belgian (rather than a dubbel even if the meaningless "extra" is put in front of it), very stereotypical for its style and though being a tad too alcoholic in the end for me, a well-made, clean example of it, without any technical errors or uncontrolled side effects. Neat.

Thank you tderoeck! 330 ml. bottle sampled @ “Belgian Ticks Tasting Ghent”. An extra dubbel at 9 % ABV, yeah, that is not really the idea,… Dark brown amber, little tanned head,… Nose is heavy sweet BE liquorice, mocha, bark, cloves, more BE liquorice,… Taste is liquorice, mocha, cacao, thin roast, chicory coffee, mocha, sugar, cacao,… Fails when you drink more, thin chicory body & cloves. Very BE but actually not bad for what it is even if it feels like it should have been richer at this ABV, not the best but decent compared to others especially their Blond which I disliked entirely.
