"Traditional" Belgian wit, bottle from Fontana in Sint-Niklaas. Thick, bit irregular, creamy, egg-white, lightly lacing, stable head over a misty straw blonde beer with olive greenish tinge, perturbed by narrow strings of visible fizz. Aroma of soapy coriander seed and doughy soapy white bread-like wheat, dried lemon zest (probably just plain old curaçao but smelling more fresh), unripe melon, green bananas, freshly cut apple, yellow plums, dried field flowers, papier maché, glue even to a certain extent, pear, fresh camomile, cucumber. Fruity onset, lots of green pear and Granny Smith apple, unripe melon, some banana, bit chewing gum but nothing too sweet, balanced by a soft underlying sourishness, sparkly carbonation fit for this particular style, slick and soapy mouthfeel. Soapy 'wheatiness' dominates the middle, cereally barley aspect too, but the soapiness becomes more pronounced when the coriander seed kicks in, leading to a medium long, soapy, mildly spicy finish in which the dried citrus peel factor offers a refreshing, almost perfumey note; ends with considerable spicy, floral hop bitterness, more expressively so than usual in this style, with a long-lingering basic leafy bitterness ensuing. Clearly hoppier and more bitter than your average Hoegaarden epigone, though the spicing remains more or less the same - albeit more expressively and convincingly so than in industrial examples of this style. Less classic in being hoppier - seems like the global hop forward-movement has reached old school Belgian wit, and frankly, I personally feel that this is a slight improvement to the old witbier template - though admittedly it also puts this beer a bit further away from what is commonly regarded as a typical witbier. Quite a nice, updated example of a very traditional, conservative Belgian ale style - exactly the thing Het Nest excells at. Within the range of classically conceived 'blanchekes', this is more recommendable than many others - but then those 'others' date from another time so comparison is probably not completely fair.
